Ciò che fa di Edgardo Franzosini uno scrittore diverso da qualsiasi altro è la sua capacità di raccontarci storie vere di personaggi, generalmente poco noti, che sembrano inventati per quanto sono fuori del comune. In questo libro Franzosini ci regala un'altra delle sue ipnotiche "vite immaginarie" percorrendo, con quella visionarietà e quella levità che lo contraddistinguono, la breve, singolare esistenza dello scultore Rembrandt Bugatti (fratello di Ettore, il fondatore della casa automobilistica, il quale sceglierà proprio il suo Elefantino danzante per il tappo della lussuosissima Bugatti Royale), divenuto celebre negli anni Dieci del Novecento per i suoi bronzi raffiguranti animali, di preferenza non domestici: tigri, giaguari, pantere, elefanti, leoni... Con gli animali Bugatti ha sempre vissuto in una sorta di struggente empatia, passando ore e ore davanti alle gabbie del Jardin des Plantes, a Parigi, o negli splendidi edifici orientaleggianti dello zoo di Anversa, a guardarli vivere, muoversi, mangiare, soffrire - identificandosi totalmente con loro. Al punto da subire un autentico shock allorché, di fronte alla minaccia dei bombardamenti tedeschi, le autorità del Belgio decisero di sterminare tutte le bestie dello zoo. "Non sono in molti" ha scritto Giuseppe Pontiggia a proposito di Franzosini "a scrivere libri che hanno questa leggerezza e questo humour discreto".
