66169Bust portrait of Louis XIII inspired to the portrait of the king by Rubens in Pasadena at The Norton Simon Foundation inv. F.1965.1.060.P painted in ca. 1620-1622. Head slightly turned to the left ruff collar and delicately engraved armor. In oval frame inscribed at bottom: ""LVDOVICVS XIII GALLIA ET NAVARRAE REX CHRISTIANISSIMVS"". Not signed but an inscription at verso in pencil provides the attribution: ""Domenico del Falcino"". There are very few works known by this skilled engraver from Siena about eighty pieces. He worked at book illustrations frontispieces and thesis prints not only as a designer but also as a publisher. Wide is the subject range although religious scenes are the most common by his hand. He worked with Luca Ciamberlano and Cesare Bassano among others. Date of publishing ca 1630. Engraving on paper trimmed to/within plate mark; total: 362 x 268 mm; some reparations especially visible from the verso; on verso handwritten notes in pencil and one inscription in pen and brown ink. In some parts the paper is thinner. Repaired tear at bottom right. Some dirt and bowning paper but extremely interesting plate. unknown

Bulino misure: mm 280 x 230 Incisore attivo a Venezia. Fratello di Guglielmo e padre di Suor Isabella, entrambi incisori. Thieme-Becker registra diversi ritratti incisi da Pecini o Piccini spesso editi da Scolari. In questa stampa, tratta da un invenzione di Paul Rubens, vengono rappresentati Salomè, Erodiade, Erode e la sola testa del Battista. Il Battista è uno dei profeti dell’Antico Testamento, il primo Apostolo di Gesù, eremita e predicatore battezzava i suoi discepoli nelle acque del Giordano presso la confluenza col Mar Morto. La vicenda biblica è nota: Erode turbato dal ballo sensuale di Salomè le promette di soddisfare qualsiasi suo desiderio, Salomè allora, per compiacere la madre Erodiade, chiede di avere su un vassoio la testa di Giovanni Battista già in prigione per aver precedentemente osato condannare il comportamento di Erode. La scena si svolge all'oscurità della prigione, le figure si staccano dallo sfondo caratterizzato da una colonna e una finestra con le sbarre. Attraverso un gioco di sguardi cercano di coinvolgere lo spettatore, solo quello di Salomè è incosciente. Gli abiti dei tre personaggi sono riccamente e abilmente descritti; le acconciature raffinate, i gioielli e l'armatura scintillante. Anche la testa del Battista ha lo sguardo sofferente, dall'occhio semi aperto la pupilla è rivolta allo spettatore. Oltre l'immagine nel margine inferiore bianco incisi il titolo e le firme "P.P. Rubens pinx", "Stefano Scolari forma" "I. Pecini ... Venetiis". Si intuisce che prima di Venetiis doveva esserci una scritta ormai cancellata. L'indicazione dello stampatore è più nera delle altre scritte, perciò si tratta di un esemplare in stato successivo al primo. L'esemplare conservato presso il MET, infatti, reca la scritta "J. Pecini sculp et excudit Venetiis". Dunque il presente esemplare è nel II stato, senza l'excudit di Piccini e con l'indirizzo di Scolari stampatore bresciano attivo a Venezia dal 1660.
