ill., br. Al "benigno lettore" il pittore fiammingo Pietro Paolo Rubens presenta i Palazzi di Genova in un volume pubblicato a proprie spese ad Anversa, la sua città. Un progetto editoriale che giunge al quarto centenario e ancora fa parlare di sé, catalizza l'interesse di studiosi, critici, addetti ai lavori e non. Più che "well travelled" all'età di quarantacinque anni ancora da compiere, il fiammingo aveva già visto buona parte dei centri artistici (e di potere) in Europa: Roma, Mantova, Genova, Firenze, Padova, Venezia, Madrid, Valladolid tra il 1600 e il 1608, senza contare quanto vide in patria. Ha incontrato re, principi, duchi, ambasciatori, conti e marchesi. Ha frequentato finanzieri, mercanti e condottieri. Era elegante e conosceva sette lingue, tra le quali il latino e l'italiano. Aveva un "gustoso e vivace colorito" e un "tratto gentile" e lo fregiavano "nobili doti", tra le quali la "facondia del parlare". Eppure, fu Genova e la ristretta élite dei genovesi che ebbe modo di incontrare ad apparirgli quanto di più moderno. Erano qualcosa di inedito ai suoi occhi i palazzi di città e le tante ville a pochi chilometri da quel centro che oggi chiamiamo "storico" e che allora era il cuore pulsante della vita economica e finanziaria che gravitava sul porto, abbracciato naturalmente ad arco da un fitto reticolo di strade strette e buie.
