191586629Cagnes Cagnes-sur-Mer 1915. Fine. Cagnes Cagnes-sur-Mer 6 avril 1915 10.90 x 16.40 cm 1 page sur un feuillet Autograph letter signed by Auguste Renoir dated in his hand April 6 1915. One page in black ink on a sheet with letterhead ""Les Collettes Cagnes A.-M."". Transverse fold marks inherent to posting. Renoir composed this missive in his house at Les Collettes in Cagnes which witnessed the birth of works of great sensuality and where he also tried his hand at sculpture: « Cher ami J'ai vu ta lettre avec plaisir je me porte à merveille et ce matin reçu lettre de Jean Renoir qui se repose quelques jours. Je t'écrirai plus longuement bientôt tâche surtout malgré tous les ennuis de bien te porter. A toi » Dear friend I was pleased to see your letter I am in excellent health and this morning received a letter from Jean Renoir who is resting for a few days. I will write to you at greater length soon try above all despite all the troubles to take good care of yourself. Yours We find this same enthusiasm from Renoir a few weeks later in the memoirs of his son Jean who was hit by a German bullet shortly after this letter: « Mon père m'attendait dans son fauteuil roulant. » My father was waiting for me in his wheelchair. It had been several years since he could walk. I found him much more hunched over than when I left for the front. However his expression was extremely lively. He had heard me on the landing and was beaming with his happy mischief. His eyes seemed to say: 'this time they really missed you!'. Touching and radiant note from the great painter a very visual document. Provenance: pasted stamp on verso of the sheet from the collection of the scholar and collector Ray Rawlins. unknown
190986706Cagnes Cagnes-sur-Mer 1909. Fine. Cagnes Cagnes-sur-Mer 5 février 1909 10.90 x 16.40 cm 2 pages sur un bifeuillet Autograph letter signed by Auguste Renoir dated in his hand 5 February 1909. 2 pp. in black ink on a double leaf. Horizontal mailing fold. Renoir penned this letter at his villa Les Collettes in Cagnes where he created works of great sensuality and essayed sculpture. The painter orders brushes and refers to an expected visit from the family of Dr Emile Baudot his physician of long standing and chief medical officer of the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Ouest. Renoir's sole pupil was the venerable doctor's daughter Jeanne Baudot of whom he painted a portrait and who sat alongside her master for a canvas by Maurice Denis. Maurice Gangnat was a patron distinguished collector and intimate friend of Renoir whom he first met in 1904 through the offices of Paul Gallimard. Upon being introduced to Renoir his pictures so delighted him that he purchased twelve forthwith at a cost of twenty thousand francs. He possessed the connoisseur's eye and Renoir permitted him to select the finest of each spring's production: ""He has the eye"" he would say of him. Between 1905 and 1917 Gangnat acquired one hundred and eighty canvases during his sojourns at Les Collettes among them thirty-six landscapes of Cagnes and its environs. ""Dear Monsieur Gangnat I have discovered upon my desk a letter which I believed long since dispatched. I was informing you that I had received notice from the Marseille Bank where you were good enough to place money on deposit for me and that I should return it to you . I take the liberty of charging you with bringing me a packet of brushes. Millaud will convey them to your residence. We continue to count upon you at the earliest opportunity. The Baudots are to pay me their annual visit toward the commencement of March. That poor doctor has been reassigned to the Gare Saint-Lazare. He was expecting it this month. . I trust you are in good health and pray advise us so that we may meet you at the station. My wife and I send you our warmest regards together with our compliments to Madame Gangnat and to Philippe ."" A charming and vivid letter from the artist to an intimate friend during his Cagnes period ordering brushes for future masterworks notably his Ode aux fleurs executed that year. unknown
190187727Cagnes 1901. Fine. Cagnes s.d. printemps 1901 10.50 x 17.20 cm 1 page sur un bifeuillet Autograph letter signed ""R"" by Auguste Renoir addressed to his friend and great collector of his works Paul Bérard. One and a half pages in black ink on a bifolium. Horizontal fold mark inherent to mailing. Renoir writes this letter to the diplomat and banker Paul Bérard one of the most significant figures in his career who commissioned no fewer than ten paintings. They maintained a correspondence spanning several decades. At Bérard's residence the château de Wargemont near Dieppe Renoir painted a number of his masterpieces: celebrated landscapes and portraits of the Bérard family ""some of his liveliest and most unsual portraits"" Anne Distel as well as their cousins and even their butler. Three years earlier the painter had traveled in the footsteps of the Dutch masters with Bérard accompanied by Claude Monet and the art dealer Durand-Ruel. At the time of writing this letter Renoir was staying in the South of France to relieve his rheumatism which eventually led him in the later part of his life to brilliantly explore the medium of sculpture. He mentions the Grand Hôtel des Colonies et des Négociants in Cannes which he often frequented during his stays in the region. This letter may date from the spring of 1901 according to his correspondence with Durand-Ruel Renoir indeed stayed at this Cannes hotel at that time. Also consistent with our letter his wife Aline left at the same moment for Essoyes her native village with their son Jean future renowned filmmaker. At the beginning of summer a few weeks after this letter Renoir would receive the Légion d'honneur from the hands of the letter's recipient Paul Bérard whom he had chosen to present him with Frances highest distinction. ""Dear friend A little less dazed this morning. I think I can give you some information. I think I will be able to pack my things tomorrow Sunday and go down Monday evening to the Hôtel des Négociants in Cannes opposite sic the station. My wife would leave for her hometown with Jean and I will stay a few days alone. Provided all this is not upset by a fifteenth sudden sic bout of flu. I still hope however to recover sic enough to be able to get about a little with you. R. Will be there Monday for dinner at the hotel."" A charming note from the great painter to one of his most important collectors : ""Bérard became a lifelong friend seemingly because he preferred the artistic vie de Boheme to the company of his own social set"" John House. This highly visual document dates from a decisive moment in the reception of Renoirs work just weeks before he was awarded the Légion d'honneur and as his paintings finally began entering French museum collections. With special thanks to Mr. Augustin de Butler for his assistance in preparing this description. unknown
