Edgar Degas ; born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas 18341917 was a French artist famous for his work in painting sculpture printmaking and drawing. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draftsman he is especially identified with the subject of the dance and over half of his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and depiction of human isolation. Early in his career he wanted to be a history painter a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classic art. In his early thirties he changed course and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter he became a classical painter of modern life. Anche se finì per essere associato agli impressionisti e partecipò persino alle loro mostre collettive, Degas non adottò mai un approccio puramente impressionista. Riflettendo un punto di vista del tutto personale e psicologico, l'opera di Degas enfatizza il paesaggio o si concentra su un dettaglio. Per questo motivo, la sua pittura è spesso analizzata con riferimento alla nascita della fotografia con tempi di posa brevi. Per l'artista, dal punto di vista tematico la natura si era rivelata meno interessante rispetto alla vita e agli abitanti della metropoli moderna. Degas ricercava i suoi motivi principalmente negli ippodromi, al circo, nelle camere da letto o nei saloni del balletto - e le ballerine restarono sempre il suo tema preferito.
