"Nel ritratto che Alice Michel scrisse e pubblicò nel febbraio 1919 sul "Mercure de France", un paio d'anni dopo la scomparsa di Degas - nota Jean-Loup Deville nella Postfazione a questo documento d'epoca, si capisce fino a che punto si rispecchi quanto Focillon scrive nella sua storia della pittura del XIX e XX secolo: "Un istante di sensibilità fatto dei suoi lineamenti di un attimo"; e non è eccessivo ciò che lo storico afferma poco dopo, vale a dire che "Degas inaugura una nuova epoca del genio e del gusto francesi, fatto di disincanto, di costruzione austera, di ripiegamento su se stessi". Si sente, dal racconto della modella, quanto di fisico, di costretto, di vincolato all'infermità del corpo, alle sue debolezze indotte dall'età e dalla malattia, si celi nella concezione di una scultura che ormai Degas esegue a tastoni, trasferendo la sensazione immediata della mano che palpa il corpo della modella, nella materia plastica, cera o creta che fosse: "Mentre lei posava, Degas, gli occhi quasi immobili dietro gli occhiali, seguiva i contorni del corpo nudo per confrontarli con quelli della piccola scultura. Ma per quanto fosse seduto molto vicino a Pauline, non distingueva che vagamente le sue forme e si alzava ogni momento per seguire con la mano la linea dell'anca o l'inserzione di un muscolo che il suo pollice modellava nella materia plastica".
