Caravaggio è oggi considerato il più importante pittore del primo Barocco, senza il quale non ci sarebbero stati Ribera, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Vermeer o Georges de La Tour. E le opere di Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Delacroix e Manet sarebbero certo state diverse. Il libro indaga, con una linguaggio accurato ma al tempo stesso accessibile, la permanenza di Caravaggio in Sicilia tra il 1608 e il 1609, ricostruendone la vicenda umana e analizzando le opere (ancora presenti sul suolo siciliano o migrate altrove) dal grande pittore lombardo lasciate sull'isola. Dal Seppellimento di Santa Lucia alla Resurrezione di Lazzaro, dall'Adorazione dei Pastori alla perduta Natività di Palermo, Italiano si sofferma sui quadri per dare al lettore preziose indicazioni di analisi per meglio apprezzare i quadri merisiani. Lo studio, partendo dal Caravaggio, si dilunga poi sugli altri artisti presenti in Sicilia prima e dopo il 1609 e che hanno subito il fascino di quella pittura nuova, intensa e rivoluzionaria. La carrellata passa dunque ad analizzare i caravageschi siciliani (Rodriguez e Minniti), i pittori minori influenzati dal caravaggismo, per terminare con quelle figure di artisti che sebbene non possano dirsi caravaggeschi hanno in qualche maniera modificato il loro stile in seguito al passaggio del "mito". Il libro è impreziosito da oltre cinquanta foto a colori, che ci fanno apprezzare appieno i capolavori siciliani.
