ill., br. Paul Klee è uno degli artisti più importanti del Novecento e sicuramente uno dei più amati: la sua pittura raggiunge tutti, incanta i bambini come i filosofi che ne hanno molto scritto. Ha dipinto diecimila opere, sperimentando, creando nuove tecniche, usando linguaggi diversi, reinventandosi sempre: è stato astratto e figurativo, lo hanno chiamato post-cubista, surrealista, espressionista, ma nessuna definizione riesce a racchiuderlo. Diceva di essere 'inafferrabile'. E in qualche modo è così. Chi era davvero Paul Klee? Questo libro indaga il mistero di un genio dotato di molti doni: poteva essere un poeta o un musicista, ma è con la pittura che ha cambiato la storia dell'arte. Dominato da una potente ispirazione e da un'inesauribile furia creatrice, che ha saputo regolare ed educare con la più metodica delle vite: un caso molto raro tra i suoi colleghi artisti. Attraverso i suoi Diari e i densi scritti teorici che ha lasciato, Gregorio Botta ricostruisce e intreccia la formazione di un uomo e la nascita di un'estetica che ha segnato il secolo. Dotata di un ricco apparato iconografico a colori, questa è una biografia artistica scritta con un linguaggio chiaro e avvincente da un autore che è a sua volta un artista.
Forma e figura sono le "parole originarie" di Cassirer e Klee e le parole-specchio per un'inedita comparazione tra la teoria delle forme simboliche di Cassirer e la teoria della figurazione quale precipitato dell'opera teorica e artistica di Klee. Il confronto, così istituito, tra "pensiero configurativo" e "pensiero figurativo" è un confronto diretto, vivo: non avviene solo sulla base di fonti estetiche comuni - le letture incrociate di Leibniz e Goethe - di contenuti teoretici convergenti, di tracce, di suggestioni, di parentele, anche lontane, ma entra nelle strutture profonde della "rappresentazione", si cristallizza sulle strutture-chiave del Linienzug, il "tratto di linea", dell'Ausdruckswahrnehmung, la "percezione d'espressione", dell'Urphänomen, il "fenomeno originario", del Werk, l'"opera", del Kunstwerk, l'"opera d'arte".Il libro di Carmen Metta giunge così a formulare una sorta di identità degli archetipi della "simbolica" già percettiva e della "figurazione" già espressiva.
