1934180735Düsseldorf: 1934. The dangerous dance of artists under Nazi rule Original maquette for the first volume of Klee's Handzeichnungen accompanied by a first edition of the book number 33 of 525 copies. Most of the edition was later confiscated by the Nazis. The maquette is signed by the art critic Will Grohmann author of the introduction and both maquette and book were owned by two expressionist dancers associated with the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Grohmann planned a three-volume catalogue raisonné of Klee's work despite mounting criticism from the Nazi Party. In 1933 Klee was dismissed from his teaching post in Düsseldorf and fled to Switzerland. The first volume appeared in October 1934; by spring 1935 the remaining copies were seized by Nazi officials and Grohmann was forced to suspend publication of the projected second and third volumes. In 1937 Klee's work was included in the Nazi exhibition of so-called "degenerate art". The first edition bears the ownership inscription of the dancer and choreographer Mary Wigman together with a presentation inscription in Grohmann's hand: "Mary Wigman Im Alter treu ist Freundschaft "loyal friendship in old age" 13 Nov. 1934". Wigman was a pioneering figure of expressionist dance and a cultural icon of Weimar Germany. She later collaborated with the Nazi regime accepting a commission for the 1936 Olympics; although privately sympathetic to Jewish students she complied with orders to dismiss Jewish dancers from her company. The maquette was presented to the dancer Mathilde Thiele b. 1907 who typed Grohmann's introduction. Thiele studied under Gret Palucca later taught Dore Hoyer and in the 1960s joined the staff of Wigman's school. When Palucca was summoned to dance for Hitler at the 1936 Olympics Thiele accompanied her as rehearsal director. Thiele later recalled the dinner with Hitler noting the mortal danger had Palucca's Jewish background been known. "After dinner Palucca and I were so relieved we drank a whole bottle of wine in our room. We considered that Herr Goering might help Palucca escape if needed. We had word that he helped artists even Jews through an underground operation despite his close relationship to Hitler" Fraleigh. Maquette: Quarto. Original hand-bound black card covers 28.1 x 24.2 cm. With 69 cyanotypes of different sizes mounted on card after original drawings by Klee. Book: Quarto. A rare early print by one of the towering figures of 20th-century art held in the permanent collections of MoMA the Metropolitan Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. Paul Klee 1879 Münchenbuchsee 1940 Muralto was one of the most original and prolific graphic artists of the 20th century. A founding member of Der Blaue Reiter alongside Kandinsky and Franz Marc and subsequently a master-teacher at the Bauhaus 19211931 Klee produced some 109 prints in total of which the lithographs of 19181925 form a particularly rare and sought-after group. Klee made fewer than 50 lithographs in his lifetime most in tiny editions; this work belongs to that early peak. The Comedy of Birds Vogelkomödie was contributed by Klee to the portfolio 25 Original Lithographien der Münchener Neuen Sezession published by Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl in Munich in 1918 in an edition of 50 45 on van Gelder Zonen paper 5 on Japan. The image with its characteristic line-drawn bird figures and wit is one of the finest examples of Klees graphic work and a highly collectible museum-quality sheet. Sheet size: 51.1 × 36.5 cm. The print has undergone careful professional restoration: stains in the paper have been removed and a tear at the lower right has been expertly repaired. The image itself is fully intact and presents beautifully. A condition report is available on request. Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl unknown

The exposition was hosted at the Institute of Archaeology in the Hofgarten on July 19 1937 in Munich and later traveled throughout Germany. Organized by the Ministry of Propaganda leader Joseph Goebbels the show was designed to reinforce in the German public mind that subversive decadent or avant-garde art work would not be tolerated in the Third Reich. Attended by over two million visitors the show displayed over 650 confiscated paintings sculptures and prints by 112 artists primarily German including Georg Grosz Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Paul Klee Georg Kolbe Otto Dix Wassily Kandinsky Marc Chagall and many other now-acclaimed modern artists. Targeted artists were the subject of merciless ridicule and denounced with most works displayed unframed and obscured by painted slogans. Attended most famously by Museum of Non-Objective Painting predecessor to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum director Hilla R who supported affected artists like Vasily Kandinsky Rudolf Bauer and others by exhibiting their work in the United States. Many works were destroyed lost or re-homed overseas after the fall of the Third Reich. <br /> <br /> <p>Laid-in is an antisemitic postcard for the third part of a series of Schandausstellungen or condemnation exhibitions "Der Ewige Jude" The Wandering Jew. The show opened on November 8 1937 to January 31 1938 in Berlin under Joseph Goebbels' direction. The exhibition traveled for the next year and a half attracting over 700000 visitors and concluding in March 1939 in Magdeburg. Verlag fur Kultur- und Wirtschaftswerbung unknown
