Near Fine with light edge wear and age toning; postcard evenly toned contemporary German stamps on the verso with 1939 postmark. <p>In the aftermath of the confiscation of nearly 20000 art works from German museums Adolph Hitler's Ministry of Propaganda organized an exhibition of modern art in order to decry its racially impure deleterious character and supposed backing by Jewish interests in the Weimar era. The exposition was hosted at the Institute of Archaeology in the Hofgarten on July 19 1937 in Munich and later traveled throughout Germany. Organized by the Ministry of Propaganda leader Joseph Goebbels the show was designed to reinforce in the German public mind that subversive decadent or avant-garde art work would not be tolerated in the Third Reich. Attended by over two million visitors the show displayed over 650 confiscated paintings sculptures and prints by 112 artists primarily German including Georg Grosz Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Paul Klee Georg Kolbe Otto Dix Wassily Kandinsky Marc Chagall and many other now-acclaimed modern artists. Targeted artists were the subject of merciless ridicule and denounced with most works displayed unframed and obscured by painted slogans. Attended most famously by Museum of Non-Objective Painting predecessor to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum director Hilla R who supported affected artists like Vasily Kandinsky Rudolf Bauer and others by exhibiting their work in the United States. Many works were destroyed lost or re-homed overseas after the fall of the Third Reich. <br /> <br /> <p>Laid-in is an antisemitic postcard for the third part of a series of Schandausstellungen or condemnation exhibitions "Der Ewige Jude" The Wandering Jew. The show opened on November 8 1937 to January 31 1938 in Berlin under Joseph Goebbels' direction. Folio. 15 15pp. This issue of DLM was published on the occasion of a Kandinsky exhibition at the Maeght gallery in 1965 where 25 of his paintings from the Bauhaus period 1927-1933 were shown. Seven of them had been chosen to be lithographed especially for this volume. This work is complete with its 7 lithographs in color after original works by Wassily Kandinsky of which 2 are double-page and 5 full-page including front wrap. Also includes 26 reproductions in black and white of Kandinsky's paintings and 4 b/w photographs of the artist at work. Ex-library copy Museum of Fine Arts Houston with stamp and sticker on front cover. Minor shelf wear. Text in French. Wrappers and interior in overall very good condition. 'Derrière le Miroir' accompanied each exposition at the Galerie Maeght in Paris France. The first issue appeared in 1946 The last #253 of the collection in 1982. DLM is born out of the passion of Aime and Marguerite Maeght. The first issues were intended by Aime Maeght to be spread among a large public with original lithographs. 10000 Copies were printed and distributed through kiosks. This failed completely and the remaining copies were sold by weight to finance the printing of issue 4 which was printed at only 1500 copies and was the catalog for the George Braque exhibition at the Galerie. Jacques Kober and Rene Char wrote the texts. This concept was continued in later issues combining great writers with great artists. In 1947 Adrien Maeght joined the firm of his parents and assisted his father in the layout and execution. The artists created original lithographs to illustrate DLM. Mourlot did the lithographic printing and the text was printed by Union in issues 4-115. From 116-148 DLM was shot in the studios of Aime Maeght. Since 1960 an edition 'deluxe' was issued on Arches paper limited to 150 copies. Maeght paperback
