The uncommon First Edition Collection of 72 Gainsborough Etchings of English Scenery 1805 oblong folio period style three quarter brown calf burgundy morocco spine label marbled boards. First edition of this beautiful collection of 72 etchings 30 hand tinted after Gainsborough sketches 30 hand-tinted handsomely bound. Plates clean and fine dated 1802-1805 some watermarked 1801 binding fresh and lovely printed by Watts and Bridgewater Queen-st. A superb example of this rare edition. 270401 mm. Ray 74. Tooley 231. Acclaimed as the father of modern landscape and of modern pastoral DNB Gainsborough was also the favorite of British high society Janson History of Art 452. Wells and Laporte etched these plates from 1802-05. While the first edition of this volume calls for 71 plates this volume has one additional illustration: there are two different essays of the second plate.
