The uncommon First Edition Collection of 72 Gainsborough Etchings of English Scenery 1805 oblong folio period style three quarter brown calf burgundy morocco spine label marbled boards. First edition of this beautiful collection of 72 etchings 30 hand tinted after Gainsborough sketches 30 hand-tinted handsomely bound. Plates clean and fine dated 1802-1805 some watermarked 1801 binding fresh and lovely printed by Watts and Bridgewater Queen-st. A superb example of this rare edition. 270401 mm. Ray 74. Tooley 231. Acclaimed as the father of modern landscape and of modern pastoral DNB Gainsborough was also the favorite of British high society Janson History of Art 452. Wells and Laporte etched these plates from 1802-05. While the first edition of this volume calls for 71 plates this volume has one additional illustration: there are two different essays of the second plate. A neat contemporary gift inscription ink to the front free end-paper otherwise VG indeed. In the rare pictorial near fine dustwrapper priced 7/6 net to the spine. The dustwrapper is complete with just a hint of rubbing to the extremities hardly worth mentioning. The rear panel of the dustwrapper has numerous quotations from critics including Dennis Wheatley where surprisingly the Author is referred to as a man. The Author's books are rare in dustwrappers and sought-after by collectors. NB; the author's real name was Dorothy Grace Waring. She was an English Fascist Campaigner in Northern Ireland and in 1938-1939 was a Committee Member of 'The Link' a pro-Nazi organisation promoting Anglo-German friendship. Small chip from left margin. <br> Thornton is pictured sitting directed facing and looking towards left. He wears a short wig plain dress arms resting on chair three-cornered hat in right hand in the back ground to right two pillars and curtain in distance to left a landscape. <br> John Thornton 1720-1790 was a wealthy Yorkshire merchant who multiplied his fortune by trading with Russia.
