Brown pebbled publisher’s cloth gilt lettering front cover decorated endpapers front inner hinge starting very faint tidemark & bubbling to cloth of fore-edges of front cover minor wear & bumping to corners still a VG bright copy w/ plates quite sharp. First edition of this lavish work reproducing the flags carried by U.S. Army infantry cavalry and artillery units during the Civil War featuring headquarters flags battle flags corps flags pennants and guidons. Following the Civil War both Sherman and Sheridan attempted to regularize unit flags and recommended that battle names be omitted from the flag and unit registers. This work compiled by US Army Brig. Gen. Holabird 1826-1907 was carried out towards the end of his service as Quartermaster which ended June 16 1890. William Burk ca. 1857-1905 and John McFetridge 1844-1903 launched their company in 1877 by purchasing William Harding’s printing house and specialized in chromolithographic trade cards advertising book illustrations calendars and other material until about 1900. Second edition revised & expanded over the original containing stunning chromolithograph plates of Germanic folk costumes executed by this costume designer during his travels through the territories of the Reichsland from 1864 throught 1870. He has included samples of Bavarian Bohemian Brandenburg Tyrolian and many other regions of Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Victorian Age. Kretschmer 1825-1891 studied art at the Prussian Academy of Art was renowned for his detailed drawings and watercolour paintings of traditional German costumes and was the costume designer for the Konzerthaus Berlin. Most of the advertisements and trade cards are aimed at a female audience relying on the desires of the burgeoning Victorian middle class. a91057Sizes ranges from 1 x 2 inches to 10 x 14 inches. Each chromolithograph is mounted on white paper stock and professionally sealed in clear plastic and ready to sell a very few are not sealed in plastic but all are still in fine condition. The chromos are so fine that possibly they were made with some modern process using original 19thc images but we cannot tell for sure. Perfect for sale at a stationary or book store. Pictures of birds dogs cats flowers soldiers children people in exotic costumes and so on. Excellent for greeting cards wedding or party favors invitations decoupage crafts etc. All in Very Fine condition. Beautiful! . unknown
