La scena, vivacissima, raffigura un porto naturale nei pressi di una imponente città, visibile sullo sfondo ed estesa verso i monti retrostanti (forse Napoli, dove Breugel soggiornò nel 1590?); diverse barche e velieri sono ormeggiati presso la riva o più al largo.
