Quite rare in the trade OCLC locates only 2 holdings and despite the British illustrator and authors we could not locate on Worldcat the equivalent UK edition which we find somewhat mystifying. Not the best copy of this book but where will you find another Lippincott hardcover

A beautifully illustrated and hand-colored volume. Pierce Egan 1772-1849 was a British journalist sportswriter and writer on popular culture best-knows work is Life in London first published in 1821. The book was adapted into the stage play Tom and Jerry or Life in London later that year and it became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. Egan turned to the Cruikshank brothers Robert and George for the illustrations. They produced 21 woodcuts and 36 lively and colorful plates to represent the range of characters and situations described in the book. The success of Life in London was so great that the artists could not color the engravings quickly enough for the demand. The book was adapted for the stage later that year and the play Tom and Jerry or Life in London became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. The book was reprinted in 1822 1823 1830 1841 1870 and 1904. Numerous imitations soon appeared namely Carey's Life in Paris Real Life in London Real Life in Ireland et al. Nicolas Stanislas-Auguste Vimar : 1851 - 1916, peintre, sculpteur, dessinateur et illustrateur français. Il a exposé à Paris et à Marseille, notamment des sculptures d'animaux. Il collabora à de nombreux journaux dont le Figaro illustré et Le Rire. Il est surtout connu pour ses talents d'illustrateur. Il illustra de grands classiques comme Les Fables de La Fontaine ou des livres de ses amis, comme L'Arche de Noé de Paul Guigou. Il a aussi écrit lui-même et illustré des livres pour enfants qui firent le bonheur des plus petits et des plus grands, comme Le Boy de Marius Bouillabès ou L'Automobile Vimar, tant il savait donner aux petits animaux qu'il dessinait les travers, les drôleries et les expressions humaines les plus variés. Il est sans conteste le dessinateur animalier préféré de l'enfance sous la troisième République et il influença durablement Benjamin Rabier. Il laisse une œuvre drôle et optimiste.
