LACKS 4 text leaves pp 217-24 - the missing 3 plates and 4 text leaves in colour facsimile reproduced from the 1904 reprint bound in to match. One gathering with edges browned some offsetting from plates to text otherwise clean and crisp throughout. Beautiful bright hand-coloured plates of hunting shooting tandem-driving livestock etc. Very rare in original edition Schwerdt II p.212 "the first and only edition of a rare and valuable magazine". The exterior of the case has fraying on edges and scuffing. There are 2 books on the lower part of the easel when it is opened. One is 'Pen Pictures' A short description of each of the books in the Bible. The second is Bible Study. The upper portion contains 2 interior scrolls with a window for each of bible pictures. These are in color. The metal key is in the pocket but the scrolls do not work. The entire scroll appears to be intact but will not turn. The plates are in early states with page locations and without titles or imprints but the earliest Buss and Seymour plates have been replaced by those of Phiz. The engraved title is showing the later correction "Weller". Other issue points: p.43 2nd paragraph below chapter V line 1 reads "ruined wall" in the singular; with the signature misprint on p.261 reading X2; with signature "E" present on p.25; the d of "holding" is raised above line on p.260; p.342 line 5 "S. Veller" instead of Weller; p.400 line 21 "his friends". Some rubbing along edges of binding. Contemporary previous owner's signature on fly leaf. Plates foxed. Jerusalem Delivered La Gerusalemme liberata is an epic poem by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso first published in 1581 which tells a largely mythified version of the First Crusade in which Catholic knights led by Godfrey of Bouillon battle Muslims in order to take Jerusalem. The poem is composed of eight line stanzas grouped into 20 cantos of varying length. The poem was immensely successful throughout Europe and over the next two centuries various sections were frequently adapted as individual storylines for madrigals operas plays ballets and masquerades; scenes from the poem were also depicted in paintings and frescoes. Each page illustrated with a hand-coloured wood engraving by the Dalziel Brothers. Publisher's adverts to the rear cover verso. A very good copy the binding secure with a little separation to the covers at the foot of the spine a small chip to the head of the rear cover and minor wear to the extremities. The contents with scattered foxing are otherwise in very good order. A scarce mid-nineteenth-century edition of Sleeping Beauty the pages linen-backed and the illustrations hand-coloured. The title forms No. 11 in Ward and Lock's 'The National Nursey Tales' series which according to the publisher's advertisement are "handsomely printed with Coloured Illustrations price 6d. each or on Cloth indestructible 1s. as in the present copy. The attention of the Public is particularly called to this beautiful Series of Children's Books which are in every respect of a superior character. Each illustration and accompanying text in a distinct decorative border. GORDON N. RAY The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914 notes that in his later years Owen turned to "original designs of his own." This mid-Victorian time period was the heyday of chromolithography printing with this a brilliant example. Embossed cloth decorated in gilt and green with gilt lettering. Lovely example of Victorian binding beveled edges endpapers toned slight toning to a few fore-edges not affecting plates which are brilliant and clean. The identity of the poet is unclear though a children's phonic reading book published in 1876 reprints the poem and attributes it to a Frances S. Hodgson not to be confused of course with Secret Garden author Frances E. Hodgson Burnett. Publisher's color-printed white pictorial boards with blue cloth spine. Pale yellow endpapers. . Oblong quarto. . Richly color printed on every leaf. Illumination inspired by the work of Owen Jones and Noel Humphreys. The designs incorporate medieval illumination-inspired initial letters and decorative bands. Text in Gothic script. Foxing to boards and some edgewear. Contemporary ink ownership signature Eliza Maude Widdas to front flyleaf and twentieth century bookplate Edward J. Law to front pastedown. Very clean and bright throughout. A very good copy of a scarce book. We could not locate much information on Elizabeth Howard-Vyse née Seymour 1815 – 1892 and Fanny Lucy Cecilia Greville 1831 – 1912 in the sources available to us. Howard-Vyse also published a travel account A Winter in Tangier and Home Through Spain 1882. This appears to be Greville's only published book. Howard-Vyse was married to Lt. Col. George Howard-Vyse at the time the present work was published; the couple lived in Windsor which was likely also the home of Greville who was the daughter of a Vice-Admiral in the British Navy. Henry Hering 1814 – 1893 was a publisher society photographer and the last in a family line of bookbinders. Though his primary business venture was not printing he did dabble in printing religious texts and gift books often with his partner Remington and was a promoter of Achille Colas' relief printing process.</p> H.
