Alfons Alphonse Maria Mucha 1860-1939 was a Czech decorative artist who wanted to bring aesthetic values into arts and crafts. He invented the Mucha Style which soon became known as Art Nouveau. His work immediately became immensely popular and has remained very sought after. This plate shows examples of horizontal bands with repeating patterns: the top one showing stag beetles and flowers the second showing turtles and flowers the third fish bubbles and "waves" and the fourth consisting of female portraits in circular frames and narrow ornamental bands suggesting a corniche frieze and architrave. Lower edge with a short tear; a few minute marginal spots; otherwise fine. Very rare especially in this excellent state. unknown

According to the Victoria and Albert Museum this is a complete set. The spaces for the menu listing are blank. It should be pointed out that these are the originals measuring 22 x 15 cm and not the smaller postcard-sized versions.Faint darkening to two of the cards. Printed on both sides. = A fine set of six Art Nouveau postcards with full colour illustrations after the great Jugendstil artist Alfons "Alphonse" Maria Mucha 1860-1939 with his autograph. The publisher is unknown. Probably published in the Netherlands as a Belgian publisher would more probably have printed a French as well as a Dutch text. Well-preserved. Not used. Slight age-toning a few tiny irregularities - including a small spot on one card - at the edges otherwise very good unmarked. Rare as we found no reference at all although a very similar card is known from a French publisher. unknown
