192973801Paris: Editions M.-P. Tremois 1929. First edition. One of 900 numbered copies. Twelvemo 5 5/8 x 7 5/8 inches. Frontispiece portrait of the author by Foujita 101 1 blank 1 colophon 1 blank pp. Unopened in publisher's pictorial wrappers. A beautiful copy of a fragile book. Kikou Yamata was born in Lyons in 1897. Her father was the great art expert he had worked with Emile Guimet Yamada Tadazumi and her mother was a French citizen. Tadazumi was sent to Lyons as Consul of Japand by the Meiji Emperor. The family moved to Tokyo in 1908 After her father's death Kikou retuned to France and was a student at the Sorbonne. One would imagine that biracial students at that time were a great rarity nonetheless she became wildly popular with the literati and the aristocracy and counted as friends such luminaries of the Parisian literary world of the time: André Maurois Anna de Noailles Jacques Chardonne Jean Cocteau Leon-Paul Fargue Paul Valéry and of course Tsuguhara Foujita. Valery actually wrote the introduction to Kikou's first book. Fame came with the publication of her first novel; Masako published in 1925. She remained in Paris until 1939. It must have been a difficult position to be in in 1939; she was half French ally and half Japanese axis. Soon after returning to Japan she was harassed for her liberal ideas and even spent 3 months in a Japanese prison. After the war she returned to France and resumed her artistic life of writing novels and practicing Ikebana. "The 1929 edition of her book Shizouka Princesse tranquille published by Editions M-P Trémois which centers on her favored themes of European and Japanese conceptions of femininity. She was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1957 and passed away in 1975." Sotheby's Editions M.-P. Tremois unknown

Original chemise sheets loose as issued.La Couronne in Rouen France on the le Vieux Marché was established in 1345. A long roll of parchment dating from 1364 provides the authenticity of the deeds. It was a tavern providing food and drink to weary travelers and locals alike. It is regarded as being the oldest restaurant in Europe however its early beginnings included a tavern so some argue it is not the first “restaurant†per se. The dilemma continues.A daily Farmer’s Market can be found just across the plaza and the church where Joan of Arc met her fate is also a landmark here.
