Wear to extremities chiefly to spine edges and corners; spine splitting at edges; some soiling rubbing and browning to covers chiefly to edges and corners; previous owner's ink inscription on front attached endpaper; tape reinforcement to inner hinges at top and lower edges; slight internal browning and/or foxing chiefly to preliminaries and edges; generally unaffecting plates. ca. 125 pages including plates; unpaginated. Text in French. Spine title: Robert-Macaire. Second part of the pictorial depiction of the title gentleman of many talents including lawyer quacksalver mesmerist etc; numbers 51 to 101 in the series this copy lacks plate 68 and substitutes a duplicate copy of the text and illustration for plate 96 in its place. Bound in half brown morocco over green heavy stock boards gilt-stamped and decorated spine and covers plain endpapers all edges trimmed. Scarce in any condition. H Del » [Charier H., dessinateur ?]- Jeu de colin-maillard. La Fayette, les yeux bandés, pose la main sur le bonnet phrygien rouge de Louis-Philippe, lequel piétine un coq et garde la tête baissée. La pl. vise à déculpabiliser La Fayette en lui trouvant des circonstances atténuantes dans l’aval qu’il donna au duc d’Orléans pour devenir le roi des Français : il avait en réalité les yeux bandés et ne voyait rien. « Colin-Maillard croit mettre la main sur la liberté, il prend mieux que ça, il prend l’ordre public et la paix ; mais enfin, il se trompe, et il prouve par là qu’il ne trichait pas et qu’il avait les yeux bien bandés ». Barthe, dans sa robe de magistrat, soutient le roi prêt à tomber. Derrière, Thiers, debout sur une chaise, applaudit. Du rideau à l’arrière-plan à dte dépasse le nez de d’Argout, assistant à la scène. A gche, Guizot tient une femme, incarnation de la liberté, tandis que Soult pose une main sur sa bouche pour l’empêcher de parler. Assis au premier plan, à gche, Dupin.
