1926WRCLIT72142Shanghai: T'Usewei Printing Press 1926. Two parts in eight volumes of thirteen published through 1938 . Open-sewn cloth backed printed boards. Heavily illustrated with hundreds of plates and facsimiles printed via chromolithography. Extremities of boards worn a few corners bruised spine labels largely chipped away volume 5 shaken with several gatherings started endsheets a bit dusty a bit musty some marginal tanning; generally a good set the plates fresh and bright. First edition in English of this mammoth undertaking translated from the French with historical and explanatory notes by M. Kennelly. The First Part comprised of the first five volume is devoted to Superstitious Practices; the remaining three volumes denoted the Second Part are devoted to the Chinese Pantheon of religious figures. Given the span of years over which the work was published many of the extant sets are fragmentary or want later volumes. Doré served as a Jesuit missionary for over twenty years in the Kiangsu and Nganhwei provinces. His original French text began publication in 1911 as elements in the VARIÉTÉS SINOLOGIQUES and the preface to the first volume of this English text projected completion of the French work in eight volumes by 1915. Quarterbound green cloth spine beige textured cloth boards gilt lettering and decorative elements black ink labels. 8vo. 206pp. Ephemera laid in. <br/><br/>Anon but written by Rudolf Erich Raspe. Wonderfully illustrated by Dore. This copy was part of the "Library of the Walt Disney Studios." According to the library card in the front pocket it was first taken out in 1945 by famed writer/animator Ray Patin. Thirteen other's took it out before it was withdrawn all in handwritten signature except one typed many quite notable. Of particular interest and note is the last.in 1980 a young Tim Burton took it out while he was at Disney on an internship. As a student at CalArts Burton made the shorts Stalk of the Celery Monster which caught the attention of Disney and he was invited as an intern working on The Fox and the Hound The Black Cauldron and Tron. 196013584n.p.: Warner Bros 1960. PRESENTATION SCRIPT. Hardcover. A near fine copy with minor blemishes and a few scratches. Marked "Final Screenplay" April 11 1960 148pp. Directed by Vincent J. Donehue with a screenplay by Dore Schary who produced the film and the play. The film starred Ralph Bellamy Greer Garson Hume Cronyn and Ann Shoemaker. An ALS is bound in from Dore Schary to first assistant director Russ Saunders dated August 5 1960 "Dear Russ / Thanks my good friend / you were a tower of strength / and good sense / Best Dore." Three black and white film stills are bound in including the great one of Bellamy clenching a cigarette in a holder as F.D.R. This is the story of Franklin Roosevelt's bout with polio at age 39 in 1921 and how his family especially his wife Eleanor coped with his illness. From being stricken while vacationing at Campobello to his triumphant nominating speech for Al Smith's presidency in 1924. The story follows the various influences on his life and his determination to recover. The film was nominated for four Oscars; Best Actress Art Direction Sound and Costume Design. Despite it being perhaps Bellamy's most famous role it was Greer Garson who received the critical acclaim. She won the Golden Globe and National Board of Review Award for Best Actress. <br/><br/> Warner Bros hardcover books

A brief but attractive monograph on Reutersward with introductory essay by Dore Ashton in English. With detailed biography bibliography and catalogue at rear of volume. A sound very good copy in simple black boards printed in black at spine. The decorated dustwrapper is worn at places and the laminate is starting to peel near the base of the front panel. What makes this copy special is that the artist has affectionately INSCRIBED THIS COPY TO DORE ASHTON and dated his inscription in year of publication. A wonderful association copy. 1969123067Madrid - Barcelona: Alfaguara 1969. Finely bound Ediciones Alfaguara edition of Cervantes' masterpiece published on the 353rd anniversary of Cervantes' death. Quarto bound in full leatherette with gilt titles and tooling to the spine illustrated by Gustave Dore. In near fine condition. One can hardly deny that Gustave Dore is not merely one of the most popular but also one of the greatest of all illustrators. Don Quixote was a text calculated to test even Dore. He was matching himself against Coypel and Tony Johannot not to mention the Spanish illustrators of the great Ibarra edition published in Madrid in 1780. He met the challenge superbly. At first he intended only 40 designs but Cervantes' book captured his imagination and he arranged for a major work. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza reached their definitive rendering in Dore's designs" Ray 328-29 337. The English-language edition of Dore's Don Quixote first appeared in 30 monthly parts beginning in December 1864. In September of 1866 Cassell announced the publication of Don Quixote in book form. Two color lithograph handbill designed by legendary psychedelic poster artist Dore advertising a performance by Ornette Coleman and his ensemble at the Greek Theatre's "Sun Suite Festival" in Berekley CA August 11 1968. <br/><br/>A watershed period for Coleman who only two years earlier had made the controversial decision to add his ten-year-old son Denardo to his band as the drummer on the then-criticized and now-classic album "The Empty Foxhole."
