"In the 1870s The Doré Bible was perhaps the most treasured and expensive book in the world" Malan 81. Certainly it proved a milestone in Doré's career. Doré's illustrations for the Bible first published in French in 1866 were a great success and in 1867 Doré had a major exhibition of his work in London which led to the founding of Doré Gallery in Bond Street London. Doré's "Bible was enthusiastically sponsored by one of the greatest French publishers of illustrated books of the day… Its original reception was truly remarkable… A second edition of the Bible was called for almost at once… Editions appeared in almost every European country… One of the first off the mark was an English edition from Cassell Petter and Galpin 1867. This caused an even greater sensation than the French edition and the demand among collectors for any and everything by Doré was clamorous" Muir 224. 18781433461878. An interesting autograph letter signed G. Doré in French approximately 80 words on 17 lines dated 24 June 1878. The previous year Doré had illustrated Ludovico Ariosto's influential poem Orlando Furioso published in London by Hachette and Co. In 1878 he produced several landscapes including Landscape in Scotland exhibited his woodcut entitled Ganymede at the Cercle de l'Union Artistique and showed sculptures at the Paris Salon. The Daily Telegraph commenting on his works at the Salon observed "It is not often that many-sided genius is so quickly appreciated by the jealous world of art" Conder The Doré Gallery: Descriptive Catalogue of the Pictures by M. Gustave Doré on View at 35 New Bond Street London. The same month Doré gained notice at the Exposition Universelle in Paris for a plaster cast of his eleven-foot vase "Poem of the Vine". Although the vase was the subject of much comment and admiration the sculptor received no awards for it. "There was a great deal of comment on this lack of appreciation evinced by the French for their fellow-countryman especially as 'La Nuit' another of Doré's superb creations occupied a place in one of the interior galleries of the Champs de Mars buildings. It is a curious fact that nowadays most people are of opinion that Doré received a great many medals and was usually one of the most distinguished contributors to the Paris Salon. As a matter of fact he never received one; not even an honorable mention" Roosevelt The Life and Reminiscences of Gustave Doré p. 440. "Cher maitre Pour la troisième fois depuis hier je recois inclus dans des lettres d'amis de Londres le feuillet détaché du Daily Telegraph du 22; c'est vous dire la très vive sensation qu'ont produites là-bas les lignes si chaleureuses que vous m'avez fait l'amitié de consacrer à la description de ma nouvelle oeuvre. Je m'empresse de vous adresser mes plus affectueux remerciements que je ne veux pas tarder d'aller renouveler de vive voix. À vous bien cordialement." "Dear Master For the third time since yesterday I have received included in letters from London friends the page taken from the Daily Telegraph of the 22nd; this is to tell you of the very lively sensation produced there by the warm lines that you so kindly devoted to the description of my new work. I hasten to forward you my most affectionate thanks that before long I hope to renew to you in person." Single sheet of notepaper watermarked "Freres" 204 x 260 mm sometime folded for mailing.
