Heavily illustrated with hundreds of plates and facsimiles printed via chromolithography. Extremities of boards worn a few corners bruised spine labels largely chipped away volume 5 shaken with several gatherings started endsheets a bit dusty a bit musty some marginal tanning; generally a good set the plates fresh and bright. First edition in English of this mammoth undertaking translated from the French with historical and explanatory notes by M. Kennelly. The First Part comprised of the first five volume is devoted to Superstitious Practices; the remaining three volumes denoted the Second Part are devoted to the Chinese Pantheon of religious figures. Given the span of years over which the work was published many of the extant sets are fragmentary or want later volumes. Doré served as a Jesuit missionary for over twenty years in the Kiangsu and Nganhwei provinces. His original French text began publication in 1911 as elements in the VARIÉTÉS SINOLOGIQUES and the preface to the first volume of this English text projected completion of the French work in eight volumes by 1915. 18601681711860. DORE Gustave. LA BEDOLLIERE Emile de. Le Nouveau Paris. Histoire de ses 20 arrondissements. 440 pp. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 66 wood-engravings throughout the text by Doré. Plus 21 double-page coloured maps of the arrondissements designed by Desbuissons and engraved by Erhard. Large 8vo. 300 x 210 mm in the original publisher's illustrated and printed wrappers. Preserved in a new dark blue cloth folding box. Paris: Gustave Barba n.d. 1860. First Edition first issue with the address of Barba on the rue Cassette. This copy includes all of the original parts in their illustrated publisher's wrappers the complete compliment of coloured maps of Paris with a copy of the general plan of Paris which was not included with the publication in parts laid in. The original first printing is nearly a different work in terms of quality and visual impact compared to the later reprints. This wonderful guide captures Paris in a moment of astounding transformation. The "modernization" of the city of Paris by Baron Haussmann was in the middle period when the Doré guide to Paris was issued. Much of the old Paris and a bit of the brand new Paris is captured in the wood-engraved illustrations of Doré the maps by Desbuissons and the text by La Bedollière. There are parts devoted to: Le Louvre La Bourse L'Hotel-de-Ville Le Pantheon Le Luxembourg Le Palais-Bourbon L'Elysee L'Opera Les Gobelins Vaugirard Passy Les Buttes de Montmartre etc. plus 2 parts of Dictionnaire de Besoins Usuels two parts of Dictionnaire des Rues de Paris and one final part on Histoire Géneral de Paris. Some wear to the wrappers but nevertheless sound and desirabble in the rare original wrappers. Leblanc 195. Vicaire IV 732. hardcover books
18521688081852. #168808 DORÉ Gustave. Folies Gauloises depuis les Romains jusqu'à nos Jours. 20 lithographs by Doré. Oblong folio 335 x 260 mm bound in contemporary half morocco with the original green printed wrappers preserved. Paris: Au Bureau du Journal Amusant n.d. 1852 or 1859. $7500.00 First Edition of this "dazzling survey of French manners and costume through the ages the last of Doré's albums. It is marked by a solidity of conception and a sophistication of outlook to which he hardly aspired in his earlier collections of lithographs" Ray. Each lithograph represents a distinct period in French history beginning with the barbarian hordes Gauls observing a human sacrifice then proceeding to a thirteenth-century Inquisition a fifteenth-century tournament a festival during the reign of Henri III the premiere performance of a 1695 drama by Racine the "edifices" of fashionable women's wigs in the court of Louis XVI a harp recital in 1810 and finally ending with the Romanticism of 1830 and 1840. These illustrations typify Doré's vivid and witty imagination. The date of Les Folies Gauloises has been assigned both to "1852" by Annie Rononciat and "1859" by Leblanc and Malan. Malan adds that the work has become rare "as most copies were long ago taken apart to sell as lithographs separately." A fine copy of this rare and important book. Ray French 245. Beraldi VI p. 29. 18611681521861. DORÉ Gustave. La Ménagerie Parisienne. Comprised of a printed title and 24 lithographic plates. 4to. 243 x 325 mm disbound in a new cloth folding box. Paris: Journal Pour Rire 1854. $4750.00 First Edition of this very early work by Doré. Created as a social satire of French culture La Ménagerie Parisienne was intended by Doré to be witty more than critical. He attributed an animal name to select Parisians attitudes and fashion in clothing corresponding to the characteristics of the animal. For example: Lions portrays a group of preening bearded men haughtily studying female pedestrians as they promenade past; Lionnes gives us a portrait of indifferent women of high class speeding in a carriage through a Parisian street; Rats d'opéra reveal three men in a box at the Paris opera house leering at the stage populated with a phalanx of comely ballerinas; and Coq is a sheer delight displaying a male dancer on tip-toe nose high in the air performing a street jig for a captivated audience. Other subjects include: Loups wolves Les Buses buzzards Chouettes owls Panthères panthers Pie magpies Gens de Bourse stockbrokers and Grandes Dames ou Gens du Peuple. This early Doré publication offers lithographs very much in the spirit and under the influence of Honoré Daumier. "All three of these lithographic albums are rare. Most copies were long ago taken apart to sell the lithographs individually. This copy is without the original wrappers and has some minor foxing and soilng but is a generally fresh and desirable copy of an early Doré rarity. Malan Gustave Doré 230.
