Fioriture diffuse, più marcate sulle prime e sulle ultime pagine, ma bell'esemplare. Edizione del capolavoro miltoniano, qui accompagnato dalle classiche tavole del Doré e presentato nella traduzione del Maffei. Precedono il poema un "Discorso preliminare" di E. Checchi e cinque sonetti anonimi dedicati a Milton (estensore ne è quasi certamente il Maffei stesso). "Il solo poema dei tempi moderni che si possa paragonare al Paradiso Perduto - ebbe a dire Macaulay in un'appassionata esaltazione della poesia di Milton - è la Divina Commedia". Il Maffei (Molina di Val di Ledro, 1798-Milano, 1885), amico e discepolo del Monti, fu notissimo traduttore di Shakespeare e di Schiller, letterato e marito della contessa Clara Carrara Spinelli (la celebre Contessa Maffei), il cui salotto letterario fu il più celebre dell'Ottocento italiano.
