No copies located by OCLC.Algie Martin Simons was an American socialist journalist newspaper editor and political activist best remembered as the editor of The International Socialist Review for nearly a decade. Originally an adherent of the Socialist Labor Party of America and a founding member of the Socialist Party of America. In addition to his position as editor of the Chicago weekly The Workers' Call and to his role in the formation of the Socialist Party of America Algie Simons occupied a prominent place in the affairs of the largest Marxist publisher in the United States to that date Charles H. Kerr & Co. of Chicago. In 1900 Kerr decided to publish his own lefty periodical and called it the The International Socialist Review It was a monthly magazine published in Chicago Illinois by Charles H. Kerr & Co. from 1900 until 1918. The magazine was chiefly a Marxist theoretical journal during its first years under the editorship of A.M. Simons and featured such writes as William Thurston Brown English social democrat Henry Hyndman AF of L trade union activist Max S. Hayes and Marcus Hitch. The first edition of this work containing John Blades Currey's memoirs of fifty years in South Africa where he exerted a deep influence on the Cape's most famous man and chronicled the political and social events of his time. John Blades Currey's was Colonial Secretary to the Government of Griqualand West and an influential businessman and politician of the Cape Colony. Illustrated with sixty four plates printed in text of which some are impressive watercolours by a variety of artists including Thomas Baines and Frederick I'Ons among others as well as a black and white photographic portrait frontispiece of John Blades Currey by Henry van de Weyde.
