1810WRCAM7622Portsmouth 1810. 148pp. Half title. 12mo. Original three quarter calf and boards. Edges rubbed scattered foxing else very good. The author's dedication "To All My Enemies" is alone worth the price: "I.rest assured that your most vigorous opposition your most virulent slander and most inveterate malice will be duly appreciated and receive the proper acknowledgements of him who has been is now and ever solicits to be distinguished by your hatred." SHAW & SHOEMAKER 19474. hardcover books
18210046721821. Hardcover. Leather spine. Good. A manuscript notebook with lovely original folk art oil paintings on both boards and two watercolors within! 4to. 30.5 by 19.5 cm. Unpaginated 18 leaves of wove paper with content followed by a few blanks. Watercolored title page with American eagle atop an orb and pedestal and a beautiful painting of ships bearing the American flag near a lighthouse perched on a rocky spit and a cape house beyond. The paintings on the boards are what strike us as the most unusual though especially because the medium is oils. One is of a windmill and a pastoral setting the other a cow drinking at a pond. Also a faint pencil sketch on the final leaf possibly a draft of one of the two cover paintings and elsewhere a tail vignette of a tombstone. The verse is not credited. The longest selection is "An abbreviation of the Shipwreck" which is in fact an abridged version of Falconer's narrative poem. Another "Epitaph on a Blacksmith" was written by Alexander Pennecuik. A poem entitled "Water" was penned by an Ann Taylor. We thus assume based on the title that most of the poetry was transcribed. The sea is the most common subject but by no means the exclusive one. The alum-tawed leather of the spine is heavily soiled. Repair of the sewing which binds the text block. Rubbing and minor loss on the cover panels. Darkening of the cover paintings.

hardcover books
181055963Portsmouth N.H.: printed at the Oracle Office 1810. First edition 12mo pp. xi 2 134-148; bound without Physiognomy a Poem by Joseph Bartlett Portsmouth: printed by William Treadwell 1810 pp. 19 1; contemporary calf-backed marbled boards; last gathering extended; good and sound. It has been asumed by some including me that Physiognomy a Poem was issued with Aphorisms. The contemporary binding on this copy with no evidence of any removal belies that assumption. The book is dedicated "To all my enemies . I now most humbly supplicate that you would take this little volume into your malignant keeping I pray you to oppose it do all you can to destroy it . don't fear my anger or my vengeance be inattentive to my mortification and be regardless of my distress: I know your goodness your friendship and attachment and rest assured that your most vigorous opposition and your most virulent slander will be duly appreciated and receive the proper acknowledgment."
