Broadside printed on bright yellow paper signed by EG Hammond and E W Blatchford urging the importance of the Appeal.

Our national life civilization and faith have "all been assailed by the shock and ruin of this war. All require renovation and new creation." Moreover "had the church of Christ been faithful" the War would have been avoided. "A true ministry in Southern pulpits sustained by a clear testimony from the whole body of Northern Christians would have rendered such a wide apostacy and conspiracy impossible." The vastness of the national territory "a whole South is to be opened for a free gospel" the ongoing waves of immigration-- all establish the need for ministers of the gospel. 1888WRCAM26356San Francisco 1888. 4;45pp. Dbd. Good. Washington A. Bartlett a former governor of California was dropped unceremoniously from the Navy amidst a veritable flurry of accusations in 1855. He appealed for restoration years later since he was out of the country at the time of discharge systematically proving each charge false and thus was restored in glory. The legal brief is a list of the charges and the final conclusion to sustain his restoration; it calls the original decision of the court to discharge Bartlett "an evil influence moved by a powerful enemy." The memorial is a lengthy testament to Bartlett's character and is endorsed by the "Society of California Pioneers" of which Bartlett was an active member. It was used as evidence in the court. unknown books
185633289Wash. : Polkinhorn 1856. First edition. 711pp. Original blue wrapper left corner of front cover missing chips to spine pencil notes on front cover and errata page. Bartlett was one of the original participants in the conquest of California and the first major of San Francisco in 1846-47. An attack on his conduct during this period caused him to defend his case in this pamphlet. It was charged that he had been engaged in financial irregularities when acting as an agent for the Treasury when he was an officer in the African Squadron. When he withdrew his petition in 1847 he was restored to service by the U. S. Senate. Polkinhorn unknown books
