Written by prominent British artist William Henry Bartlett best known for his illustrative engravings and historical travel works. In blue full-morocco binding. Contemporary inscription to the front free endpaper dated 1854. Externally generally smart with moderate bumping and rubbing leading to visible loss of leather especially to the joints which are cracked but firm and light marking to boards. Internally hinges very marginally weak leading to slight tension to the binding namely between pages 104 and 105 otherwise text firmly bound. Bartlett was professor of natural and experimental philosophy at West Point Academny. He directed the construction and outfitting of the Academy's observatory which he used to produce his papers on optics and comets. Researching a partial solar eclipse in 1854 Bartlett became "the first in America to obtain quantitative results from astronomical photography". He was one of the original incorporators of the National Academy of Sciences.
