An illustrated work following a biblical journey through Israel and Egypt written and illustrated by William Henry Bartlett. The fifth edition of this work. This work is the account of the author's travels through the Middle East following the Biblical footsteps across the desert for forty days as the Israelites followed Moses leading them out of Egypt. Written and illustrated by William Henry Bartlett. Bartlett was an illustrator who travelled extensively throughout the Middle East Europe America and the Balkans. During this travels he wrote travel works which he also illustrated. He is best known for his drawings which had been rendered into steel engravings making sepia wash drawings to the exact sized to be engraved mostly landscapes. Some of Bartlett's other works include 'American Scenery' 'Canadian Scenery' and 'History of the United States of North America. With one folding map twenty-five plates and seventeen in-text engravings. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper 'To Miss Elizabeth White on her attaining her 21st year the gift of Mr & Mrs Howard Dec 2nd 1862'. Undated dated from Copac from copies at Bristol University and Manchester University. Collated complete. In the original cloth binding with gilt decoration to the front board and to the spine. Externally smart. Minor marking and rubbing to the boards. Minor shelfwear to the head and tail of the spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd handling mark and the odd light spot the odd spot being mostly to the plates.
