Bartlett was the Commissioner of the Mexican Boundary Survey after the Mexican-American War and his book is a cornerstone work of southwestern travel and exploration. His narrative remains one of the most readable and entertaining accounts of the American Southwest for the period and the illustrations engraved after Bartlett's sketches are some of the most competent depiction's of the area.
