Bartlett was a skilled topographical draughtsman who travelled extensively providing the plates for a number of travelogues. CANADIAN SCENERY is considered his finest work. Between 1836 and 1852 he visited the U.S. and Canada four times and sketched much of what he saw. The views include Kingston Cobourg Ottawa River Quebec Toronto Queenstown scenes of Indians and much more. Willis provides the text descriptive of the plates and relating a history and the current conditions in the eastern provinces and Upper and Lower Canada in 1839-40. SABIN 3786 ref. Notes: Nathaniel Parker Willis 1806 – 1867 was an American author and editor who worked with several other noted American writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He was highly popular in his life and became the highest-paid magazine writer of his day. Willis embedded his own personality into his writing and addressed his readers personally specifically in his travel writings so that his reputation was built in part because of his character. Most contemporaries recognized how prolific he was as a writer and how much time he put into all of his writings. James Parton said of him: “Of all the literary men whom I have ever known N. P. Willis was the one who took the most pains with his work. It was no very uncommon thing for him to toil over a sentence for an hour; and I knew him one evening to write and rewrite a sentence for two hours before he had got it to his mind.â€<br><br>William Henry Bartlett 1809 – 1854 was a British artist recognized as one of the foremost illustrations of topography of his generation. Bartlett’s primary concern was to render “lively impressions of actual sights.†Nathaniel Parker Willis described Bartlett's talent thus: “Bartlett could select his point of view so as to bring prominently into his sketch the castle or the cathedral which history or antiquity had allowed.â€<br><br><br> Size: 4to. 273x210 mm Illustration: Very good examples of these substantial works on colonialism and European settlement in Canada with detailed and lyrical descriptions as well as a profusion of plates illustrating many views and scenes accompanying the text. 1888WRCAM26356San Francisco 1888. 4;45pp. Dbd. Good. Washington A. Bartlett a former governor of California was dropped unceremoniously from the Navy amidst a veritable flurry of accusations in 1855. He appealed for restoration years later since he was out of the country at the time of discharge systematically proving each charge false and thus was restored in glory. The legal brief is a list of the charges and the final conclusion to sustain his restoration; it calls the original decision of the court to discharge Bartlett "an evil influence moved by a powerful enemy." The memorial is a lengthy testament to Bartlett's character and is endorsed by the "Society of California Pioneers" of which Bartlett was an active member. It was used as evidence in the court. unknown books

From the introduction: "For the 18th Century imprints the important period of late colonial times and the American Revolution the only chronological list of the John Carter Brown Library is still the Third Part of John Russell Bartlett's first catalogue which we are now reprinting. The fifty copies originally printed have almost all disappeared and the Union Catalog at the Library of Congress indicates that less than five copies are located in American libraries. The present reprint edition was made from the copy in the New York Public Library. The handwritten annotations were made by the eminent bibliographer Wilberforce Eames one-time Lenox Librarian who continued Sabin's bibliography.
