Binding is faded on spine with moderate wear at tips of spine faint uneven darkening on rear cover slight paper residue on lower front pastedown from bookseller's nameplate else a very good copy with text quite fresh and clean. Author's Private Edition so stated on title page. The author states that 'This series of papers. were originally published in the 'Overland Monthly'. A small private edition in book form has been printed at the insistance of friends who read these essays years ago. If these pages disclose more of the freedom of outdoor life than the philosophy of private meditation it is because the author loves the woods better than the town." from two-page preface by W. C. Bartlett. A collection of nine essays many inspired by travel in California including 'A Week in Mendocino' 'A Day on the Los Gatos' 'Shadows of St. Helena' etc.; one of the essays has a brief discussion of Mark Twain's travels in California pp. 196-197.
