The book is written entirely in French. Profusely illustrated with drawings on nearly every page by the author - many of the drawings are full-page. The book is a witty comical look at 19th-century Parisian equestrian culture. It serves as a humorous critique of French society the horse-racing scene and the etiquette of horsemanship among different social classes. The book explores the daily life of people who lived and traveled with horses in Paris. It covers the nuances of horse-drawn carriages riding and dressage. The book is celebrated just as much for its hundreds of caricatures and sketches as it is for its writing. Larger book that measures 11 1/2" tall x 8 1/2" wide with 404 pages. PROVENANCE: This copy has both an ink and an embossed stamp of the "Metropolitan Club Library" in Washington D.C. The Metropolitan Club is an ultra-exclusive highly prestigious private social club just two blocks from the White House. Founded in 1863 it has historically served as a quiet gathering space for presidents politicians and business titans. Known as D.C.'s oldest and most prestigious club it functions as a sanctuary where power brokers can socialize dine and exercise away from the public eye.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Clean covers and spine. Bright gilt lettering on the spine. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Consistent mild foxing to the pages though a bit heavier here and there. Page 35 has a 1.5" tear at the outer edge that has been repaired with an old strip of clear tape that has turned brown. Embossed "Metropolitan Club" stamp at the bottom right corner of the front end paper and their ink stamp on the title page. Oblong 23 by 27 cm. 48 pp. A tour of the streets of Paris and the various contretemps encountered most involving in some way horses whether working or sporting horses. Thus we encounter the collision of horses with modern technology from bicycles to electrified trams. The humor is somewhat dry and ironic. While one here can enjoy a glimpse of the pre-automobile city there is enough that is recognization in the various accidents activities pretensions and confusion that one might nod in recognition of many of Crafty's remarks. Binding is near mint in terms of the brightness of the cloth and imagery. Light foxing in early leaves then only occasionally. Most leaves are clean. Tiny pinprick hole on FFEP where there is the remnants of a seller's small price tag. Librairie Plon unknown
