This outstanding caricaturist was a member of the Salon des Humoristes and an officer of the Legion of Honor. His works offer us glimpses into Parisian high society at the turn of the century. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. Sem captured the spirit of the subject and in turn produced images that were true to life. This beautiful print is a part of Album de Sem published in Paris c. 1910. The colours are bright. These pochoirs were printed with some colour and were hand finished. moderate edge wear with some small closed tears and slight nicking to the edge of the sheet slight marking otherwise. Clean but with a touch of foxing to the verso. The original album consisted of 38 plates. 510 by 325mm 20 by 12¾ inches. A copy of this print is held in the wonderful Les Musées de la ville de Paris. As well as the caricatures which made him famous he created work in a very different style as a correspondent during World War I. Usure modérée des bords avec quelques petites déchirures fermées et de légères entailles sur le bord de la feuille légères marques par ailleurs. Propre mais avec un peu de rousseur au verso. L'album original comprenait 38 planches. 510 par 325mm 20 par 12¾ pouces. Une copie de cette estampe est conservée dans les merveilleux Musées de la ville de Paris. Inventaire : G.37025. 19194741Paris 1919. A lovely hand coloured pochoir taken from the "Album Le Grand Monde à l'Envers." Second series Published in 1919. Sem published this album immediately after the war. When the creation of Income Tax had terrified the wealthy Sem had imagined the great and the good of this world reduced to small jobs each in his own speciality. In the Café de l'Opera two gentleman in evening dress perform "hunt the ball" tricks. Below is a large man beside his bicycle watching the beach. To the reverse a lady is renting out bathing costumes. There is also a man on a bike selling L'Avenir and a gentleman selling Le Gaulois. Nice print. The colours are bright. These pochoirs were printed with some colour and were hand finished. A good clean sheet slight marking only. 52 by 33 cm. Lorsque la création de l'impôt sur le revenu avait terrifié les riches Sem avait imaginé les grands et les bons de ce monde réduits à de petits métiers chacun dans sa spécialité. Au Café de l'Opéra deux messieurs en tenue de soirée exécutent des tours de "chasse au ballon". En contrebas un grand homme surveille la plage à côté de sa bicyclette. À l'opposé une dame loue des maillots de bain. On voit également un homme à vélo qui vend L'Avenir et un homme qui vend Le Gaulois. Belle impression. Les couleurs sont vives. Ces pochoirs étaient imprimés avec de la couleur et finis à la main. Une bonne feuille propre avec de légères marques. 52 x 33 cm.
