1914123335Paris Succès 1914 1 vol. broché in-folio, broché, sous portefeuille décoré de l'éditeur, non paginé (27 ff.). Premier fascicule, seul paru, de cette chronique des extravagances de la haute couture parisienne à la Belle Epoque, illustrée par Sem de nombreux dessins in-texte en noir et en couleurs et d'une suite de 16 planches de croquis de mode en couleurs intitulée "Le musée des erreurs". A noter également un chapitre spécial concernant les chapeaux. Tirage limité à 300 exemplaires, celui-ci justifié et signé à l'encre par l'artiste (n°2), complet des 12 pages de publicités contrecollées sur papier fort ainsi que des 3 feuillets d'annonce volants sur vergé Roma pour les usines Renault, le parfum Coty et les ameublements de Jansen. Notre exemplaire est incomplet du feuillet d'achevé d'imprimer, le portefeuille est un peu usé avec de petites rousseurs.

Lithograph by the French caricaturist 'SEM' Georges Goursat 1863-1934 who was recognized for his caricatures of socialites of the French Belle Epoque and of the people who served their fashion needs. He was active in the early years of the 20th century.<br /> <br /> The caricature depicts a bowler hat being produced through 'alchemy' by the famous Paris hat maker Gelot located at the place Vendome. Gelot was the preferred hat maker of King Edward VII; his coat of arms is at the top of the image. The hat maker raises a domed cover or cloche to reveal a freshly produced black bowler hat as steam billows in the background. One has the impression the hat was fashioned or cooked up through some instant proprietary process and all the hat maker had to do was raise the lid to reveal his latest creation. The cloche was perfected by the French as a way of protecting tender plants. Lithograph with stenciled color signed in the plate. Approximately 13 x 19 3/4" unknown

This outstanding caricaturist was a member of the Salon des Humoristes and an officer of the Legion of Honor. His works offer us glimpses into Parisian high society at the turn of the century. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. Légère pliure sur le papier (non visible sous la caricature) ; sinon, l'illustration est en excellent état. Signée SEM dans le coin inférieur droit. En 1923, il a été nommé officier de la Légion d'honneur. Il est décédé en 1934.
