190020752Paris 1900. Very good condition. Lithograph by the French caricaturist 'SEM' Georges Goursat 1863-1934 who was recognized for his caricatures of socialites of the French Belle Epoque and of the people who served their fashion needs. He was active in the early years of the 20th century.

The caricature depicts a bowler hat being produced through 'alchemy' by the famous Paris hat maker Gelot located at the place Vendome. Gelot was the preferred hat maker of King Edward VII; his coat of arms is at the top of the image. The hat maker raises a domed cover or cloche to reveal a freshly produced black bowler hat as steam billows in the background. One has the impression the hat was fashioned or cooked up through some instant proprietary process and all the hat maker had to do was raise the lid to reveal his latest creation. The cloche was perfected by the French as a way of protecting tender plants. Lithograph with stenciled color signed in the plate. Approximately 13 x 19 3/4" unknown

From a signed edition of 300 on Arches paper this number 283. This rare portfolio captures the high-stakes courtroom drama of Paul Bolo a French financier turned traitor. Bolo orchestrated a massive anti-war propaganda campaign in France using $2.5 million in German funds-funneled through the Egyptian Khedive Abbas Hilmi. After the plot was unmasked Bolo who had adopted the title "Bolo Pasha" was convicted of treason and executed by firing squad in April 1918. Across 68 masterful lithographic sketches the renowned caricaturist Sem Georges Goursat documents the tension of the proceedings. His sharp economical lines bring to life the judge the defiant defendant and the parade of witnesses. While Sem is best known for his whimsical depictions of the Belle Epoque elite this work demonstrates his keen eye for the psychological weight of a national crisis. Georges Goursat better known as Sem was the premier social chronicler of his age. A regular contributor to France's leading periodicals his work remains highly esteemed today for its ability to capture the essence of the French ruling class with equal parts wit and precision. unknown

193021051Maxim's: Paris. Pillivuyt: Berry area France: Pillivuyt A. Simon Pillivuyt 1930. Fine. Humorous porcelain ashtray from the legendary Maxim's arguably the most famous restaurant in the world for much of the 20th century decorated with the funny caricature of a smiling hardworking coat check valet his arms draped with piles of furs his hands balancing a plethora of top hats and canes. Maxim's was a culinary monument to the Belle Epoque with its sumptuous Art Nouveau design and sensibility a scene Sem was closely associated with and Sem did many a memorable splashing illustration of the habitues of Maxim's as they wined dined and peacocked in the restaurant. N.d. circa 1930. Measuring 13.5 by 8.5 cm at the longest and widest. A. Simon is a French china wholesaler and retailer going back to the 1880s and still in business. It was and is particularly well-known as a supplier to hotels and restaurants. We believe that A. Simon actually acquired Pillivuyt in the 1940s and this might suggest a later date for the ashtray but it isn't dispositive. Still our earlier dating is certainly not something we can state with complete confidence. We can safely say the ashtray is mid-20th century however. Pillivuyt [A. Simon Pillivuyt] unknown
