022302Paris 1913 and 1912: L'Edition d'Art H. Piazza. Limited Edition. Quarto. Two volumes presentation copies by the illustrator Umberto Brunellesch. The first volume: La Nuit Venitienne is limited to 500 copies on Japon paper. The present copy is number 307 inscribed and signed by the artist dated 1914 to Morris Kerztein Should have been spelled Herztein. Illustrated with 20 tipped-in full color plates by Brunelleschi with printed tissue guards. Laid in is a two page autographed letter from Margaret Andrews of San Francisco dated 1944 to Sidney M. Ehrman who was to become the recipient of these two volumes. Margaret Andrews acquired them from the late Dr. Herzstein. The letter explains the gift of the two volumes signed by Umberto Brunelleschi Alfred de Musset’s La Nuit Venitienne and Contes du temps Jadis which as she writes:. "were very personal possessions of the late Dr. Morris Herzstein. They came from the San Francisco Costume Ball of 1944. These point to the fine friendship of the Ehrman and Hellman families and makes one believe it is appropriate to request your acceptance for your library for the pleasure of your family and greetings to you for Mrs. Ehrman". Sidney M. Ehrman 1873-1974 was a prominent San Francisco lawyer with the firm of Heller Ehrman White & Mcauliffe. He also served as a regent of the University of California Berkeley whose gift in 1932 of $200000 to the University established a Professorship in the name of his son Sidney Hellman Ehrman 1905-1930 that brought the distinguished James Westfall Thompson to the University. Since his son had just finished his graduate work at King’s College Cambridge he also underwrote a scholarship there. He owned the mansion which is known by his name that was designed by Lewis P. Hubert architect in 1915-1916. It is now owned by the state of California where it has become a state monument. He was a friend of Moshe Menuhin son of Yehudi Menuhin and when his controversial book was published The Decadence of Judaism in Our Time he underwrote the purchase and distribution of 100 copies of the book which was banned in San Francisco bookstores though Paul Elder’s and the Emporium refused to submit to the ban. Many prominent Jews came to his defense though the extreme pro-Zionist elements attempted to censor the book as they did with Ben Hecht’s Perfidy. He also was an opponent of the loyalty oath which drove a number of professors from the University of California to Princeton. The donor was Margaret Andrews of San Francisco. She was a participant and planner of the San Francisco Costume Ball and lived at 1201 California Street in San Francisco. The second volume: Contes Du Temps Jadis is limited to 400 copies on Japon paper the present copy is #290 illustrated by Brunelleschi with 20 full color plates tipped in with printed tissue guards. Inscribed and signed. Both volumes bound in full brown leather flat spines decorated in gilt black leather spine labels gilt marbled endpapers both volumes with the original wrappers bound in and housed within matching slipcases rubbed around the edges. Includes 8 lovely full-page color pochoir illustrations by Barbier Brunelleschi and others and multiple additonal color pochoir plates within the text. Under the literary direction of Monsieur Jean Hermanovitz and the artistic direction of Monsieur Brunelleschi. The portfolio in its elegant pictorial wrappers is loosely bound as issued. From the library of noted collector Gordon R Smith with two different Ex Libris bookplates by David Bekker one to each volume. Volume one's bookplate is full page shows naked ladies with cats signed lower right and numbered lower left 36/60 whilst volume two is smaller and shows three dancing ladies again signed and numbered. The bookplates are printed in colour. The memoirs of Casanova the eighteenth century Venetian gambler eroticist and spy. The volumes cover the years 1734 to 1755 & 1755 to 1772. This set illustrated with 32 full page colour plates with tissue guards and 79 smaller illustrations within the text fleurons and tailpieces by Umberto Brunelleschi printed on velin de Condat paper. Condition: A very good set. There is a hint of fading and a little marking to the spine and the slipcase has a bump to the lower rear right corner. Contains five fairy tales: La Belle aux cheveux d'or - L'Oiseau bleu - Gracieuse et Percinet - L'adroite Princesse - Le Prince chéri. With striking colour ilustrations by Umberto Brunelleschi 1879-1949 active as fashion costume and stage designer in Paris. The beautiful master-binding correspond with the lovely illusstrations. The binder Lucien Durvand 1852-1924 operated one fo the finest workshops in turn-of-the-century Paris. In 1900 he was awarded a silver medal for his bindings at the Universal exhibition and according to Flety he was devoted to improving the craft of binding rightup to his death. An almost untouched breathtaking copy of this splendid book. Umberto Brunelleschi was a brilliant Italian painter book illustrator and fashion designer probably best known nowadays for his erotica. Here though he applies his bold flair with color and his puissant imagination to fairy tales and resulting is something truly extraordinary! This material would seem his true calling for here his sensual proclivities are expressed with none of the lurid excess that one might find in some of his other work. And the images are sheer delight which enchant and arrest the eye. The costuming and elegance of the figures depicted are evocative of dance and the images surely benefit from Brunelleschi's fashion career. And there is still the languid androgyny that spills forth the erotic sensibility. This and the immersion in atmospherics make the pictures also squarely belong to the high Art Nouveau fancy an association reinforced by the foliate borders which curiously have a formal lineality not necessarily affiliated with that fin-de-siecle aesthetic movement. What is most conspicuously Art Nouveau it should be recognized is the panache of the whole book production represented here. This is truly a book that in and of itself is artwork. hardcover

Unpaginated about 155 pages. With 12 pochoir plates and 93 color vignettes dispersed through the text. The pochoir was done by Jean Saudé. The story concerns princes in exile hopping from one grand hostelry to another a louche lifestyle brought on by the overturning of the old order by the First World War and the Nouveau Riches and gold-digging Flappers they encounter in the new age of faster automobiles and the like. The illustrations glamorize the new silhouette and streamlined fashions and capture the rage for the fox trot and tango and as always. As always Brunelleschi shows an affinity for the exotic and a kind of Orientalism. Original wraps are bound in to lovely half-morocco binding. Minor light foxing on the fore-edge. Minimal sunning of the spine. Otherwise a clean bright and very handsome copy. Édition de la Guirlande unknown
