16-5158Château d'Anet is a château near Dreux in the Eure-et-Loir department : 18the & 19th Centuries. The collection includes 5 large format engravings published by A. Lévy - 41 x 31 cm. and 41 x 61 cm. very rare; 2 drawings dated 1838; 4pp manuscript on the history of the owners; thirteen 18th & 19th Century engravings and lithographs. Considered as a jewel of the French Renaissance and a mecca of art Anet Castle was built in 1548 by King Henry II to his mistress Diane de Poitiers. The greatest artists of the time involved in its construction which include Philibert de l'Orme architect and Renaissance humanist known for his anti Italianism and interpretation of antiquity. The field includes the magnificent Chateau de Diane where there is remaining a wing only the Greek cross Chapel Royal masterpiece of originality with its checkerboard trompe l'oeil the triumphal gate which is embedded in the curious clock that shows the phases of the Moon and the funeral chapel where Diane rests again since 29 May 2010.Le château d’Anet construit pour la belle Diane par Henri II était orné d’une fontaine la représentant sous la forme d’une déesse. Cette statue symbolise les tensions artistiques de l’époque tiraillée entre le maniérisme italien de Fontainebleau et l’affirmation du classicisme français.:Christian Joschke historien d’art.Des sculptures du château d’Anet construit par Henri II pour Diane de Poitiers il ne reste guère que ce qu’Alexandre Lenoir a pu sauver en 1804 pour son musée des Monuments français installé à Paris au couvent des Petits-Augustins. Démantelé endommagé par la vague iconoclaste de 1795 le château fut vendu et partiellement démoli par son acheteur à l’aide d’explosifs avant d’être abandonné. Mais la célèbre statue de Diane rapatriée aux Petits-Augustins puis léguée au Louvre demeure. Charles de Saint-Julien was a French journalist in St. Petersburg 1829-1863 and an important witness to Russian history in the 19th century.</p><p><strong>Format:</strong> In-8° 26 x 17 cm 540 pages</p><p><strong>Illustrations:</strong> Complete with 21 plates including title vignette frontispiece and 20 steel-engraved copperplates of which 8 are original works by Rouargue. Finely hand-colored from the period.</p><p><strong>Binding:</strong> Elegant antique half-binding in green chagrin with 'chagrinée' percaline boards spine with gilt-decorated raised bands author and title. Decorated with gilt-stamped details and Kokoshnik-inspired contours. Gilt edges.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Good overall condition. Light wear to headcap and endpapers minor damage to corners. Solid and decorative binding. Bright paper with scattered minor scratches.</p><p>A superb copy of this rare travel work featuring costume and city illustrations of Russia Moscow and St. Petersburg.</p> hardcover

Moderate amount of foxing on text leaves and steel engraved plate margins as inevitable with the paper stock employed. The color plates are cleaner and fresher looking. Joints repaired.
