The book has the subtitle Transformations visions incarnations ascensions locomotions explorations pérégrinations excursions stations cosmogonies fantasmagories rêveries folâtreries facéties lubies métamorphoses zoomorphoses lithomorphoses métempsycoses apothéoses et autres choses. With its transformations inventions and fantasmagories the work aims to reflect an era in full transformation. Un autre monde recounts and illustrates the extraordinary voyages of three neo-gods Puff Krackq and Hahblle. . It is indeed a philosophical voyage that Grandville offers us . The reader led to a strange planet imagined by the artist is invited like Gulliver in the land of Laputa to a parodic journey through his philosophical scientific economic and religious ideals his enthusiasms inventions and preoccupations: romanticism mechanization socialism money serialized novels advertising Anglomania philanthropy phrenology etc. » Annie Renonciat La Vie et l'uvre de Grandville Paris ACR-Vilo 1985. First Edition. "The moving force behind this book was its publisher P.-J. Hetzel who himself contributed many chapters under the pseudonym of P.-J. Stahl Through Grandvilles animals Hetzel and his colleagues offered a witty and telling commentary on contemporary politics and personalities. Bouchot described the result as the best satire on French manners during the middle of the century recalling "the anger to which it gave rise the outbursts of laughter it provoked and the lawsuits of which it ran the risk." These allusions pass largely unnoticed today but Grandvilles animals remain as amusing as ever thanks to the wit and verve of his compositions. The types and situations he depicts are indeed "of every period and every country." "The final plate shows the artist at the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes. He is sketching the visiting creatures who in turn are peering at cages containing Hetzel Balzac Jules Janin and other authors of the Scènes de la vie privée et publique des animaux. It should be noted that the engravings for this book are by Brévière the one craftsman whose renderings of his work Grandville refused to criticize." Ray Carteret III 553. 1854119159Paris: Gustave Havard 1854. Making a mockery of mankind First edition in book form of Grandville's masterpiece of satirical illustration. The work originally appeared as a portfolio of hand-coloured lithographs printed by Langlumé in 1829; this edition was enlarged with an accompanying text and reproduces the illustrations as wood-engravings. The task of re-engraving the images on wood was entrusted to Auguste Desperet 1804-1865 a skilled artist "whose talent was highly regarded by Grandville himself who considered him to be his collaborator" tr. from Brivois. Grandville the pseudonym of Jean Ignace Isidore Gerard 1803-1847 was the most famous and talented French caricaturist of the period. Les métamorphoses du jour was his first major success and the work which established his reputation. The illustrations inaugurated his characteristic "bitter burlesque" style which exposes human vices and behaviours by giving men and women the heads of animals. The work was intended as a satirical commentary on the Parisian burgeois society of the 1820s. "Lust gluttony anger and the other deadly sins are stigmatized now with the blow of a hammer now with the thrust of a stiletto; while the foibles and humors of mankind also receive due attention. Throughout the series Grandville's choice of beast-heads is inspired; and the force of his conceptions and the wit of his captions rarely falter" Ray p. 198. Large octavo 255 x 158 mm. With 70 wood-engraved and hand-coloured plates; title page and verso of last leaf printed in red and green incorporating black wood-engraved vignette. Near-contemporary red half morocco by Émile Rousselle of Paris spine with raised bands gilt lettering in second compartment marbled sides and endpapers top edge gilt others trimmed. A touch of wear at corners short splits to rear joint ends inner hinges cracked but firm a few spots of foxing to endpapers and occasional edges short closed tear to margin of one leaf slight offsetting from plates else clean. 1836375399Paris: Aubert 1836. Quarter-bound brown calf and silk jacquard decoratively stamped in gilt on covers and spin. Shelf worn with edge wear to margins and corners some chipped. Foxing to interior pages. Reimpression of the 1829 edition with the same 71 plates framed here in double black lines but missing the original preface as well as the extra two Belgian plates issued in 1830 and afterward censored.

Scathingly funny and wildly inventive each of the illustrations feature human figures with animal avian or pescatory faces in scenes ranging from looking through telescopes shopping and delivering babies to getting haircuts sauntering the streets dancing and fishing among other common everyday activities. Grandville's aim in creating the prints was to satirize the bourgeois middle class of Parisian society and thereby expose people for the beasts they really are. Aubert unknown
