With many in-text illustrations as well as 50 fine hand-coloured plates by Grandville including a frontispiece. All text in French. Finely bound in black half calf with gilt titles and decoration to spine and black cloth over boards. All edges gilt. Some browning and spotting around plates. Binding very lightly handled. Very good. Considered the 'Grandfather of Surrealism' Grandville inspired many later masters of the genre including Lewis Carroll Max Ernst and Ralph Steadman. Paris: Fournier 1845. A fine copy of this delightful Grandville work preserved in the scarce publisher's polychrome binding. While this book lacks the surreal qualities of Un Autre Monde the presence of a substantial number of anthropomorphic illustrations in the manner of those which had appeared in Scenes de la vie privee et public des animaux elevate it above the typical "romantique" book and make it a worthy addition to the Grandville oeuvre. Elle est illustrée d'un beau frontispice et de cinquante grands sujets hors-texte tous de Grandville gravé sur bois, en premier tirage. Les auteurs des textes sont Daurand-Forgues (dit Old Nick), Taxile Delors, Arnould Fremy et Amédée Achard. Queqlues rousseurs éparses sans gravité. Très bon exemplaire.
