Elle tient, de plus, sur ses genoux, de petites statuettes (Némésis et sans doute le Figaro, c'est-à-dire les deux journaux naguère d’opposition, et servant ensuite le gouvernement, lequel a acheté leur silence avec de l’argent). Le baron Louis, dans l’ombre, représente l’Avarice, posant ses pieds crochus sur un sac d’or. Au deuxième plan, de gche à dte : Talleyrand en Vulcain, forgeant des chaînes et des protocoles (« PROTOCOLE // N°73050 », « BELGIQUE », « « ANGLETE […] [ANGLETERRE] », « PROTOC […] // N°74051 »), des serments (« SERMENS [SERMENTS] // de // 93 à 1832 »), l’histoire de la « révol [révolution] », Cerbère gardant les prisons de « Ste PELAGIE », de « LA FORCE » (chien à trois têtes couvertes de casquettes de police). La Discorde tenant non une pomme, mais une poire, et la Cupidité tenant un registre d’ « AGIOT » au-dessus du temple de la Bourse. Au troisième plan, de gche à dte : d’Argout en statue de Pan en terme (avec une palette et des pinceaux à la base), les furies : Persil avec ses « saisies » et « condamnation », Guizot et sa guizotine (la troisième furie n’est pas identifiée). Soult en Mars brandit un cierge, une figure ( ?) tient une fourche tordue et une clé de cachot. Barthe en Thémis tient un double glaive et une balance, Girod de l’Ain en Bacchus, Lobau en Neptune tenant la seringue à clystère se terminant en trident. Viennet en Apollon (ou Orphée ?) joue la « PHILIPPIDE » à la harpe, Montalivet, représentant la Flatterie, verse de l’ambroisie (sous forme de papiers avec les inscriptions : « TRES FIDELE SUJET // FLATTERIE ») dans la coupe de Louis-Philippe en Jupiter, accompagné de son coq foulant des armes, et coiffé d’une couronne en forme de poire. Derrière lui, la Paix avec son rameau, et la Frayeur avec son lièvre. Le duc d’Orléans en Hercule s’appuyant sur sa massue portant l’inscription « DISCOURS », Dupin en Momus, dieu de la Folie, ayant pour marotte une chaussure. Et enfin, Sébastiani, en paon (sans doute Junon). A l’arrière-plan, une figure volante représentant le journal le « MONITEUR », la Nuit, répandant des pavots, et un zodiaque qui sert à dénoncer les différents événements des derniers mois (« JUIN 1832 » avec une balance, « JUILLET 1832 » avec un lion, « AOUT 1832 » avec un scorpion, « SEPTEM […] [SEPTEMBRE 1832] »). Puis, un homme portant une faux : il s’agit de Saturne, emportant avec lui dans son sac la « MEILLEURE // REPUBLIQUE ». Ce dieu se retire aux Etats-Unis (La Fayette ?). Et enfin, un siège vide au centre : il s’agit de celui de la « Sagesse » (in explication).

Les journaux défenseurs du gouvernement sont alors assimilés à des prostituées peu avenantes, vieilles et défraîchies. A gche, la « GAZET […] [GAZETTE] // DE // FRAN […] [FRANCE] », journal légitimiste, incarné par une vieille prostituée grande et mince, portant une paire de lunettes. Elle tient dans la main gche une couronne. A son bras se tient un jeune homme pourvu d’un long cou. Il s’agit de la personnification de la « Jeunesse dorée » (in explication). Il tient une canne dont le pommeau est la tête de Chateaubriand, lequel est allé rendre visite à la famille royale à Prague de début septembre à début octobre 1833. Et justement, derrière eux, un panneau de bois indiquant le chemin pour la « ROUTE // DE PRAGUE ». Prague est la ville où émigra Henri V avec sa famille en 1832. La pl. met donc en scène les deux personnages sur le point de faire le pèlerinage pour cette ville. Au centre, le journal « FRANCE // NOUVELLE », incarné par une prostituée à l’embonpoint marqué. Elle porte un collier fait de croix de la légion d’honneur et une robe portant des motifs de poires. Elle porte une boucle d’oreille en forme de poire. Son tablier prend la forme d’un exemplaire de journal avec le titre de la revue et les lignes d’un article, illisibles. Louis-Philippe, qui finance ce journal et l’alimente d’informations, se tient face à la prostituée et porte sa main sous son menton. Il lui donne un billet portant l’inscription « article // communiqué ». Vu de dos, il porte une redingote, un bonnet et une plume sur l’oreille. Derrière eux se détache la silhouette de ce qui semble être la boutique du roi, assimilé à un écrivain public fournissant des articles au journal (« PEPIN (PHILIPPE) // ECRIVAIN // PUBLIQUE [PUBLIC] »). Une affiche est placardée sur le côté de l’échoppe, portant l’inscription « DEUX // ANNÉES DE // Regne [Règne] ». A dte, la prostituée du « JOURNAL // DES // DÉBATS », dont la versatilité et l’opportunisme politique sont dénoncés à travers les inscriptions sur le papier accroché à la robe : « VIVE LE // ROÂ !! », « VIVENT // les // Bourbon […] [Bourbons] », « VIVE // L’Emp […] [Empereur] ». La robe est décorée d’un aigle bicéphal et de la date d’instauration de la « […] ESTAURAT […] [RESTAURATION] » : « 1815 ». Son chapeau porte la cocarde tricolore et un médaillon orné d’une fleur de lys. Elle donne le bras à un préfet (Gisquet ?) ventripotent, qui met la main dte dans son veston. Sa redingote porte des distinctions honorifiques. Derrière eux, un canapé portant des motifs évocateurs de la monarchie de Juillet : une seringue à clystère, une toque de magistrat, une poire à face humaine, et plusieurs autres petites poires. Complete with all plates coloured and 2 not coloured in the last section. Bound in 1 volume in quarter burgundy leather over diced patterned paper boards with floral decorated spine and lettering in gilt. Joints and spine ends rubbed with light cracking and scuffing to the spine egde-wear to the boards with bumped and rubbed corners. Marbled endpapers hinges not cracked and strong but must handle carefully as the text block is fragile still together and quite tight but weak at some gatherings some of which are a little pulled by a couple of millimeters. Foxing throughout but mostly to the text and not the coloured plates all which have guards and are quite fresh and clean last two plates uncoloured are with heavier foxing. Of all his works Les Fleurs Animées was Grandville's own personal favorite. In the fifty hand-coloured plates Grandville portrays a flower or plant metamorphosized into a lady clad in the petals or leaves particular to that flower or plant. Further his flower turned human exhibits the human personality traits which Grandville perceives as characteristic of the species he is illustrating. Les Fleurs Animées is "a little world created and governed by its own laws which was full of significance for Grandville" Ray. The books are nevertheless in outstanding condition. The brown leather spines gleam and there is minimal wear to the marbled boards. The marbled endpapers are still more vibrant. The pages are bright and unmarked with minimal foxing. The bindings and hinges are very solid. Despite the excisions they were at least made unobtrusively and with utmost precision so that there is essentially no evidence they were ever present. Volume 1: 339 pages; Volume 2: 324 pages. Text in French. Boards are a little rubbed at the corners and there are some faded ink blobs to both volumes. Internally there is sporadic spotting but none affecting the beauty of the plates. Overall in a very good clean condition. The first gather to volume two is slightly protruding where it has started to split from the text block - but it is still holding firmly. 275 x 185 mm 10¾ x 7¼ inches. Foxing throughout but the plates have been left largely clean through tipped in tissue guards. Ink inscription to both ffeps. dated 1920. Generally a very handsome set with characteristically lovely hand-coloured Grandville illustrations depicting flowers as people; considered "a significant work in the art of French illustrated books." . Spine with five shallow raised bands elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt in compartments gilt board edges pale gray endpapers all edges gilt. Some light foxing to text pages only. An excellent example of Grandville's favorite work.<br /> <br /> "After Un autre monde the fifty-two colored engravings of Les fleurs animées are the chief example of Grandville's effort to penetrate to the meaning of objects like an 'intellectual miner' preface to Les étoiles p. xi even though only fifteen of the designs are entirely from his hand Bouchot p. 58. Though the images in the book are of Grandville's time his manner of proceeding is that of an artist of the modern movement exploring the same subject through a sequence of slight but significant variations. Most of the plates show an elegant lady in a garden her dress covered with an extraordinary pattern of flowers. She is sometimes accompanied by respectful creatures animals and insects even fish and reptiles. As the series nears its end there are more elaborate scenes of flower-ladies in groups. A little world is created governed by its own laws which was full of significance to Grandville and hence becomes so to the reader as well. His first biographer wrote in the preface to Les étoiles pp. xiii-ix: 'The Fleurs animées are the very thought of Grandville; they were his favorite work the work into the execution of which he put all that was in him of poetic and gracious originality of dexterity of mind and observation of that prodigious perspicacity which made him divine affinities hitherto unperceived by anyone and discover new worlds'" Ray The Art of the French Illustrated Book. <br /> <br /> Ray The Art of the French Illustrated Book 198.
