There are also scattered light inscriptions in pencil in the margin and on the verso. Otherwise in very good condition. Félicien Victor Joseph Rops 7 July 1833 - 23 August 1898 was a Belgian artist associated with Symbolism and the Parisian Fin-de Siecle. He was a painter illustrator caricaturist and a prolific and innovative print maker particularly in intaglio etching and aquatint. Although not well known to the general public Rops was greatly respected by his peers and actively pursued and celebrated as an illustrator by the publishers authors and poets of his time. He provided frontispieces and illustrations for Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly Charles Baudelaire Charles De Coster Théophile Gautier Joris-Karl Huysmans Stéphane Mallarmé Joséphin Péladan Paul Verlaine Voltaire and many others. Best known today for his prints and drawings illustrating erotic and occult literature of the period he also produced oil paintings including landscapes seascapes and occasional genre paintings. Sein Ulenspiegel das Epos des Freiheitskampfes der Flamen gegen die spanische Unterdrückung begründete die moderne französischsprachige Literatur Belgiens.Charles besuchte das Jesuitenkolleg Saint-Michel in Brüssel und arbeitete von 1844 bis 1850 in der Bank Société générale de Belgique. Er studierte Jura und Literatur an der Université libre de Bruxelles unter anderen bei dem Historiker und Freimaurer Jean-Jacques Altmeyer 1804–1877 und dem Professor für französische Literatur Eugène Van Bemmel 1824–1880. Später lehrte er dort selbst Literatur.Ab 1855 etablierte er sich als Journalist und freischaffender Schriftsteller. 1856 gründete er zusammen mit Félicien Rops die Zeitschrift «Uylenspiegel journal des ébats littéraires et artistiques« die bis 1863 erschien. Zeitweise war er beim belgischen Staatsarchiv angestellt und hatte für kurze Zeit einen Lehrauftrag an der Militärschule in Brüssel.Mit seinen volkstümlichen Erzählungen hatte er großen Erfolg. Nach fast zehnjähriger intensiver Arbeit für die er seine Stellung bei den belgischen Staatsarchiven aufgab gelang es De Coster mit seiner Übertragung der Abenteuer Till Eulenspiegels in die Zeit des achtzigjährigen Befreiungskampfes 1568-1648 den großen flämischen Malern ein ebenbürtiges literarisches Werk gegenüberzustellen. Der Erstveröffentlichung 1867 folgte diese erstmals illustrierte Ausgabe. Der Erlös reichte jedoch nicht aus den Autor von den Schulden zu befreien die er während der Arbeit an dem Buch hatte eingehen müssen. Sheet dimensions: 46x35.2cm Tense face of a young professor bound by the tongue to the lower body of another figure with strong legs and arms. The latter is visible only from behind and seems to be breaking free from the grip of two strange tentacles emerging from the bulb from which the professor's head protrudes. These surround the main action and create an impression of movement. Fourteen busts of highly expressive figures all different from one another form a circle around this central scene.
