He flew with the Lafayette Flying Corps and founded the Civil Air Patrol. He was the first member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association AOPA. He was editor of Flying Magazine and involved with the investigation of the zeppelin Hindenburg disaster. He witnessed the test of the atomic bomb on Bikini Island which it is thought led to his death. He wrote a foreword to Richard Bach's first book Stranger to the Ground. Embry-Riddle University has dedicated a building to him the Gill Robb Wilson Memorial Aeronautical Science Center.
