This is a Facsimile of the Golden Cockerel Press edition of 1928-1931 and illustrated throughout with engravings by ERIC GILL. Two Volumes housed in a CLAMSHELL BOX not quite flush to edges but likely intentional due to size/weight. Included with the Main book is a Second volume entitled "The Golden Cockerel Press The Canterbury Tales and Eric Gill: Decoration and the Mise en Page" by Peter Holliday. A useful addition to such a sumptuous volume. This is the same size as the 'Canterbury Tales; but very slim. This is Bound with a black cloth spine sage-green paper boards and a Title Label to the front board. "The Canterbury Tales" is bound in Black Nigerian goatskin leather by G. Lachenmaier with Fabriano Tiziano endpapers. Leather is blocked in 24-carat gold with gold titles/decoration to the spine and upper board. All edges gilt. With a black satin ribbon marker. Canterbury Tales = c.768 pages. Peter Holliday Essay = 48pp. Dimensions of the books are 12 ½" x 7 ¾" Outer Clamshell dimensions are Small Folio = 35cm by 23cm 13¾ by 9 inches. This Edition is Limited to 1980 numbered copies. This is Number 516. Limitation at the end of the book. NO Inscriptions or marks. Clean Tight and Bright. Printed by Memminger Medien Centrum on Corolla Classic watermark laid paper. The Original The Golden Cockerel Press edition of The Canterbury tales was originally bound in four volumes corresponding to the four days of the narrative with a contents page at the end of each volume.
