A superb copy.This exquisite little booklet was never published only a few copies being distributed to friends and then later as a keepsake at a Double Crown Club dinner at which Rene Hague was the speaker. <br>It was the first piece to be printed on the press at Pigotts where Gill lived as indicated in the colophon where the date limitation and number of the printing appears “1.9.20 225 1â€.<br>In the Chiswick Book Shop New York envelope when it was sold a long time ago for $7.50. Copy no.71 of 200 numbered “proof†copies signed by Eric Gill and Douglas Pepler. 12mo. original quarter smooth canvas with red paper covered pictorial boards with Dumb Driven Cattle by Gill on the upper cover a little rubbing and fading to the boards and mild spotting to endpapers otherwise a good and bright copy.Seen as the precursor to the S. Dominic’s Press with its early Gill engraving and close collaboration between Gill and Pepler. <br>At the time this book was published Pepler worked for the London County Council and was the organiser of the first school meals service in London. Publishers' scarlet cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt device to upper boards in unclipped cream pictorial dust-jackets also illustrated by Gill. Lower board of "Julius Caesar" stained otherwise cover cloth clean and bright; ownership inscription dated '37 to the same volume otherwise no annotation or inscriptions. Some jackets toned to spine with a few nicks & creases; minor loss at tail of spine of several volumes over the set. "Julius Caesar" jacket price clipped with paper tape repairs to reverse 6 cm tear with associated small loss and stains to rear and "Antony and Cleopatra" repaired to reverse with browned adhesive tape. A very good set in like jackets. Scarce as a complete set in this condition. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.
