19289170London: Lanston Monotype Corporation 1928. One of 55 copies of this beautifully printed issue of a lecture on sculpture given by Eric Gill at the Victoria and Albert Museum. In addition to the text Gill contributes a red device to the title page and a map of his home Piggotts on the final leaf - with a loose leaf to receive offsetting from this image clearly in place since the book was issued. Gill has signed the book on the page before the map at the end of the text choosing to date it not to the imprint but to the date of the actual lecture: 'Eric G. Dec.r 1927'. Bound in black buckram with a puncture to the lower cover which has dented but not pierced the last three leaves of the book. Spotting throughout. PROVENANCE: from the collection of a Palestinian woman living in Switzerland in the 1980s whose sister knew Eric Gill. A very good copy of a very scarce book.

Original gilt-decorated half maroon morocco and gilt-lettered brown cloth lightly marked and a little rubbed and bumped at the extremities impacting a little on the top corner of the textblock; minimal light foxing and occasional mild signs of age and use; a very good copy with the plates in excellent condition. Ferguson 9924e but we have seen any number of bindings identical to ours and none as described by Ferguson. He also states that 'The Mitchell Library copy has a pencil note: 200 printed in George Robertson's hand-writing'. In spite of this comment and the 181 subscribers' names in our experience the book is not as rare as these figures would suggest. The fact that this item is essentially the same as Ferguson 9807 with the Galbraith imprint under the gold blocking carrying the Wigg imprint and the Wigg binder's label on the rear pastedown leads us to suspect that the answer has something to do with this change of publisher after the book was printed. Correspondence on this matter is welcome . <p>Provenance: Rodney Davidson 1933-2016 lawyer National Trust luminary and book collector with his 'M. & R. 2008003729London: Frontline Books 2008. New book 496 pages. The Franco-Austrian war of 1809 was Napoleon's last victorious war. He would win many battles in his future campaigns but never again would one of Europe's great powers lie broken at his feet. In this respect 1809 represents a high point of the First Empire yet at the same time Napoleon's armies were declining in quality and he was beginning to display the corrosive flaws that would contribute to his downfall five years later. In this volume John H. Gill tackles the political background to the wars and the opening battles of Abensberg Eggmuhl and Regensburg. He explores the motivations that prompted Austria to launch an offensive against France while Napoleon and many of his veterans were distracted in Spain. Though surprised by the timing of the Austrian attack on the 10th April the French Emperor completely reversed a dire strategic situation with stunning blows that he called his 'most brilliant and most skilful manoeuvres'. Following a breathless pursuit down the Danube valley Napoleon occupied the palaces of the Habsburgs for the second time in four years. Hard Cover. As New/As New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
