1751113658London: At Mercers Chapel Cheapside. Fair with no dust jacket. 1751. The Second Edition with ADDITIONS. Hardcover. Soloman's 'Song of Songs'. Full leather gilt borders and 5 raised bands to the spine. Leather shabby and peeling away in parts with losses to the corners/edges and to the head/tail and other parts of the spine. Scuffed corners through to the boards. Hinges split front hinge - front board detached - and rear hinge splitting but strings holding tight on the back board. No title label. Internally this book is COMPLETE BUT has been damp to the bottom at some point in the distant past and this has left grubby browned endpapers and smeared browned corners throughout the book. The pages are wavy/wrinkled throughout but all text is clear and easily read. The bottom edges of the first six or so pages including the Title and Frontispiece are very friable chipped and torn with a little loss - but only to the blank bottom corner/edges. Throughout most of the rest of the book the bottom blank edge is friable and browned with tears/loss here and there. I have 'strengthened' some of the tears throughout the book with clear archive tape but the rest of the text is in the main solid and without loss. One front edge with loss to the front side blank margin - page 155. SEE IMAGES. 6 564 pp. Full page Engraved Frontispiece and lovely rectangular copper 'cut' across the top of Chapter One. A former owner's name in old browned ink W. Williams and S12 written on the front free endpaper and a different name and address plus "his Book" written in old ink on the rear pastedown. Gill was a noted Hebrew Scholar and the author of many other works on Calvinism and the Baptist faith. " . Overall a poor/fair probably reading/working copy with the faults as noted above but it is the Original 18th Century edition with additions complete with the frontispiece and has no underlinings etc. Generally Sound and reasonably tight.
