No. 50 of 200 copy limitation printed on Papier d'Auverne à la main. This is the second tranch numbers 6 to 50. Calligraphy and imagery on 45 "monotypes gravés" -- monotype engraving -- by Icart. Folio. 34 by 28 cm. Title gathering -- a folded sheet with three pages half title limitation page and title page followed by 93 pages then a colophon or description of the limitation tranches. Of the 93 pages 45 of them pictorial plates consisting of Icart engravings. Included also is a second set of Icart's engravings contained in a folded paper folder. The second suite of engravings is solely pictorial without the overlay of text. Also included is the actual copper plate for one of Icart's pictures. The printed text throughout reproduces Icart's calligraphic hand both as appears on the pictorial plates and the pure text pages. Capital letters on the text pages plus the page numbers are rendered in red and red is used as a contrasting color on the title page as well. Fuller color appears in a Gothic stained glass window vignette surrounding the first letter of the text. Portfolio with moderate wear by the flaps. Slipcase has light wear. Louis Justin Laurent Icart 1888-1950 was a French painter graphic artist and illustrator. His work was influenced by the French masters of the 18th Century Watteau Boucher Fragonard and Degas Monet and Redon. Icart produced more than five hundred engravings and illustrated some thirty books. Pp. iv 28. 4to. loose as issued in the original wrappers with original gold-printed glacine housed in the original chemise and slipcase of gold highlighted marbled paper covered boards. A very good bright copy the slipcase is a little rubbed at the extremities and the chemise has very subtle reinforcing of the spine.Chrysis forms the subject of Louys’s best known erotic book Aphrodite. Set in Alexandria the book follows the fortunes of the courtesan Chrysis who is known for her beauty and her skill at winning the devotion and servility of men and her ambition of love with the sculptor Demetrios. Louys was writing to espouse his philosophy that nudity human sexuality and pleasure should all be embraced in the pursuit of perfect love. No. 13 of 20 copies on Vélin B.F.K. with 2 additional suites of plates coloured and uncoloured this being the second of four tranches from an edition limited in total to 295. Folio 33.5 by 25.5 cm. 154 pp. Pagination begins at 13 the first page of the novel with the first gathering containing the limitation or "Justification du Tirage" and one plate and the title page and "Premiere Partie" pages of the second gathering as well as several blanks counted in the pagination but not paginated. 21 pochoir plates and text illustrations these about a third of the page and placed variously on their pages. All pages have lovely ruled borders decorative letters for the beginning of sections and other ornamental touches. The additional suites are separate from the loosely bound text. All of the leaves in the additional suites have their own tissue guards just they do in the book proper. Slipcase is missing top edge panel and has some general wear. The hardcover folder/cover of the book proper has moderate wear as well especially along its joints. The book proper and the two additional suites are clean and bright and one could say Like New. The tissue guards are slightly browned along the edges and have some creasing here and there and more frequently along their edges as to be expected given their peskiness and tendency not to stay in place. Overall this is a beautiful copy of the work with Icart's evocative louche illustrations. Éditions Egix hardcover
