Bound without wrappers. extensive panoramic scroll of this once-in-a-generation wine festival original hand-coloured lithograph on 30 plates conjoined. each plate aprox. 185 x 500 mm. 7 1/4 x 19 3/4 in. An impressively large panorama running over 14 meters in total. The fête of 1833 was held over two days in August involving nearly 800 participants pulling numerous floats and was organized by David Constantin and Steinlen. In the present day the Swiss fête is organized by the Confrérie des Vignerons Brotherhood of Winegrowers and while they are free to choose how often the festival takes place it can only happen five times each century. The next Fête des Vignerons was held in July 2019.

There were two showings with tickets costing between one and three francs each. The vignerons Jean-Louis Blanchoud and the Lécheyres brothers were crowned. A further thirty-two vignerons also received awards. This scroll depicts the actual participants in the procession wearing costumes also designed by Steinlen. Many of the floats are symbolic and represent the seasons or Bacchus but many of them show the actual tools of the trade such as a display of barrel making various crop management tools and even a large wine press. The final image is that of Noah's ark as Noah is considered to be the first vigneron. 191639256Paris: La Guerre / d'Alignan 1916. WITH 18 LITHOGRAPHS ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER ALL SIGNED BY STEINLEN. No. 1 all published. A portfolio of 18 ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS by Steinlen complete 14 printed in black and 4 printed in blue. ONE OF ONLY 100 SETS PRINTED ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER WITH ALL OF THE LITHOGRAPHS SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. World War I greatly affected Steinlen and he set out to publish the "Wartime Sketches" a series of 72 lithographs in four portfolios. It was the artist's intention to create a 20th-century "Disasters of War" which would continue the tradition established by Callot De Hooghe and Goya. Only the first of these portfolios was published the one I offer here in a very small edition. The lithographs in this portfolio focus on the human side of war: there are no battle scenes just powerful lingering images of women and children recruits and refugees. Benezit says that "Au cours de la guerre 1914-1918 il a consacre aux malheurs de la Belgique et de la Serbie envahies quelques estampes qui resteront parmi les productions les plus interessantes inspirees par la guerre." In most sets the lithographs are signed only in the stone but IN DELUXE SETS LIKE THIS ONE EACH OF THE 18 LITHOGRAPHS IS ADDITIONALLY SIGNED BY STEINLEN IN CRAYON. A 19th lithograph by Steinlen not part of this series is laid in at the front. Large folio 40 cm publisher's portfolio. Lithographs loose as issued. Very light wear to portfolio but clean and solid with original ties. THE LITHOGRAPHS ARE ALL FINE AND BRIGHT. Very rare: most copies have been dismembered. A very beautiful work by Jean Richepin 1849 - 1926 superbly illustrated by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen 1859-1923 in an elegant contemporary binding.
Richepin was virtually unknown until the publication in 1876 of this volume of verse entitled La Chanson des Gueux a declaration of war against the bourgeoisie. Richepin's outspokenness resulted in his being imprisoned and fined for "outrage to morals." The collection was republished without the contentious pieces which were published separately in Brussels in 1881. The book is divided into several parts: 1°/ Beggars of the Fields; 2°/ Beggars of Paris; 3°/ We Other Beggars; Epilogue: The End of the Beggars. A slang glossary concludes the work.

For this 1910 edition the illustrations were entrusted to the Swiss-born Steinlen who was politically engaged and often collaborated with anarchist and socialist press. "You will find Steinlen at the entrance to the construction site at the workshop door at the factory exit; he is everywhere where people gather on days of celebration riot or strike. . He succeeds in establishing the link which unites simple hearts in showing the intimate cohesion of the group of the theory of the collection; no one possesses to the same degree as Steinlen the gift and the power to make the shiver of a common anguish run through an assembly Roger Marx preface to "L'Oeuvre gravé et lithographié de Steinlen" Paris Société de Propagation des Livres d'Art 1913. 19163398Paris: D'Alignan Editeur; A. Vernant & E. Dolle Imprimeurs 1916. First Edition One of 400 sets printed on velin. All in Very Good to Fine Condition/Title and publisher label from the original folio have been preserved on the cover of a new wrap. Now preserved in an attractive matching clam shell of brown and beige marbled paper. Uncommonly found complete set as issued with all eighteen 18 lithos each is signed by the artist in pencil. Too often individual lithos have been seperated from the set for individual sale making complete copies quite rare. 3 3/4" x 5 1/4" lithographs on velin tipped on to 7" x 9" sheets. Croquis de Temps de Guerre "Sketches from Wartime" is Steinlen's major World War I print portfolio. The scenes depicted take place between 1914 and 1916 and are the head and torso studies from his larger series on Serbian refugees. Included is an upper torso preliminary of the most famous of these "La Poilue". D'Alignan was the director of the "La Guerre editions" and exclusive publisher of Steilen's work between 1915 and 1919. Steinlen was well known for his sympathetic eye in depicting the miseries of war. One can discern even from these small poignant drawings of face and torsos the suffering and burdens of war on especially the mothers and children. This was originally intended to be a series of four albums alas this is the first and only one published.

Theoophile Steilen 1859 - 1923 was born in Switzerland. He initially studied Theology in Lausanne a precursor to his humanitarian sentiments as well as being a commited socialist and anarchist. He moved to Paris and in 1883 became part of the bohemian collective of Monmartre along with Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Emil Zola. He was the primary illustrator of song books for Aristide Bruant and served as the resident illustrator for the magazine "Chat Noir". When not creating art the crew often gathered at the cabaret of the same name. HIs enduring best know creation is the "Tournee du Chat Noir" poster the iconic black cat advertising the cabaret which remains one of the most reproduced images in poster history. "Tout vient du peuple tout sort du peuple et nous ne sommes que ses porte-voix. Everything comes from the people everything comes out of the people and we are merely its mouthpieces." - T. A.
