Flush-cut card covers featuring a wrap-around design by Georges Rouault; spine a little rubbed with a few horizontal cracks and short splits at each end of the front joint; stitching a little loose; trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy. The artistic component of this number includes three original lithographs by Henri Matisse a double-page work 'The Dance' with two individual 'figures of skaters' on the verso as well as three drawings by him; seven small lithographs on four pages by André Derain; six full-page colour lithographs from 'Tacuinum Sanitatis' a fourteenth century book of health; and photographs by Brassai and Bill Brandt. Fully illustrated throughout with drawings paintings and photographs these 2 numbers contain original full colour lithographs by Chagall Miro Rattner Klee Matisse & Derain. The two issues have been bound into one hardbound volume and the binding has been beautifully hand painted in acrylic and oils with an abstract design including the volume title to both the boards and the spine by noted Neo-Expressionist American painter Gaylen Hansen. There is some rubbing to the edges and one small split to the outer edge of the front board without loss which has been strengthened to the inside with clear tape but generally the book is in very good condition. Included with the volume is a fine hardback copy of the fully illustrated book issued in 2007 to accompany the retrospective exhibition "Gaylen Hansen: Three decades of Paintings" at the Seattle Art Museum October 2007 - January 2008 and Salt Lake City Art Center February - April 2008.</p> Verve. This the first issue of the American edition of this French publication has a cover specially designed by Matisse and a series of original color lithographs illustrating the four elements by Fernand Leger Joan Miro Rattner and Bores. There are heliogravure illustrations of photographs by Man Ray Brassai Louis Guichard and others. Also among much else a double-spread photograph of Picasso's "Guernica" taken by Dora Maar which had only recently been exhibited at the Spanish Pavilion of the Paris Exhibition of 1937 an article by Andre Gide "A few Reflections on the Disappearance of the Subject in Painting and Sculpture" and previously unpublished letters and drawings from Cezanne to Emile Zola. All texts are in English translated mostly by Robert Sage. A very bright clean copy with the subscription order form housed in the bright paper-covered box with the illustration by Matisse reproduced on the lid.
