She likes to call herself an "old-lady schoolteacher." She is thirty-four. Around Kelly School she is famous for her discipline: "She is mean bro" says one of her students. But children love her. And so will the reader of this extraordinarily moving book by the author of House and The Soul of a New Machine. Mrs. Zajac spends her working life "among schoolchildren." To some it might seem a small world a world of spelling and recess and endless papers to correct. But we soon realize that Mrs. Zajac's classroom is big enough to house much of human nature. Her little room contains a distillate of some of the worst social problems of our time. Some of the children's young lives seem already stunted by physical and emotional deprivation. And some are full of precarious promise. As we come to know these children we long for their salvation - and we come to understand as if for the first time the difference that a good teacher can make in a child's life and in our society. Among Schoolchildren provides the most realistic account of American education ever written - on every page we encounter the precisely rendered truth for which Tracy Kidder is famous. But this is more than a book about education. It is about one woman's indomitability about the joy of acting out of conscience and love. At bottom its subject is nothing less than the struggle between good and evil. In Among Schoolchildren Tracy Kidder has written his most emotionally powerful most memorable work. --Source: Publisher ; Tracy Kidder was educated at the University of Iowa and Harvard University. He served in the US Army in Vietnam. Kidder has garnered numerous literary awards including the Pulitzer Prize in General Non-Fiction and the National Book Award for General Nonfiction both in 1982. He has also been honored with the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award 1990 and the Christopher Award 1990. His publications include numerous nonfiction articles and short fiction for The Atlantic and other periodicals. 196874182N.p.: N.p. ca. 1968. Modern working collection of over 100 original stencils tracings and hand painted samples of Federal furniture decorations. All laid in enveloped or taped into a modern three ring binder. These were used for furniture projects mainly chairs so signs of use are to be expected. A treasure trove for researchers and practitioners.Up until the 1840s stencils were widely used in America for walls and furniture. The use of stenciling declined as wallpaper became more economically viable as a decorative finish but it did not die out entirely. This collection dates from the 1960s and the designer perhaps named M. Robertshaw has taped in two pages of the catalog of stenciled American Federal furniture by Hitchcock Chair Company of Connecticut so it is likely he worked there. In 1818 Lambert Hitchcock founded an innovative chair company in the northwestern hills of Connecticut where he produced beautiful hand stenciled furniture. The company was ver successful and didn't close its doors in 2006 although it has recently been revived. N.p. unknown
53918KIMONO DESIGN - MANUSCRIPT. 10 1/2" x 14 1/2" oblong design book bound in single backed sheets on the short side with string not fukuro-toji. With a brushed title label sealed throughout but otherwise anonymous. As often happens with manuscripts the name of the shop which used it as a pattern book has been excised. There are 25 black and white design sketches for elaborate kimono. More of a Kano rather than a Rimpa style. The album probably dates from the first half of the 19th Century. A lovely item which suffers from very bad worming throughout. Though the damage is worse at the extremities of the work holes are shot through the paper and effect the design images as well. Sold with all faults. unknown

This sensational archive of original fashion designs for Kansas City MO based department store suppliers by Marian Ross Mizelle before her move to California in the 1970’s to establish the Madrigal boutique with her husband Elliot A. Mizelle 1916-2007. These vividly reveal the Mid-20th-Century fashion trends following World War II. Many of the designs in this collection reflect the transition from the late 1950’s elegance and emphasis on Dior’s “New Look†highlighting femininity and opulent use of fabrics towards the more youthful designs emerging out of Swinging London which were a slimming down beginning to raise hemlines with short skirts bolero tops and increasing influence of Pierre Cardin Andre Courreges and Givenchy. The Mid-20th-Century saw a tremendous upsurge in marketing slimmer lines tighter fitting bodices and fashions emerging from such cultural events as Audry Hepburn in her iconic 1961 “Breakfast at Tiffany’s†film which heavily influenced a generation of young women.Young Marian Ross b. 1936 after completing her Fashion Academy certificate in 1955 free-lanced and worked in the New York fashion industry before landing with the influential and hot-selling Gay Gibson label with Gernes Garment Co. in 1961. The Gernes Garment Co. had been originally founded in 1928 by Sara Desaix Gernes 1896-1978 and her husband Alexander Gernes 1882-1947 to market her groundbreaking fashion designs targeting everyday fashion for young women juniors and teens. Her designs proved very popular as she initiated and fashioned sizing and dresses and clothing for teenagers through young college-age women and her designs proved very successful and were marketed through Chicago’s Marshall Field’s department store. By 1961 the Gernes Garment Co. moved their design and pattern making department to New York to capture young fashion designers such as Marian Ross as well as be closer to the influential couturier houses in New York & Paris. The Gay Gibson label was marketed in Mademoiselle Seventeen Glamour and Vogue magazines with Twiggy often modeling Gay Gibson dresses in the 1960’s. Marian’s designs were inventive playful and emphasizing movement as well as comfort. Many of the fashion patterns depict her models in flats ballet flats or even shoeless while dressed in elegant evening or formal dress. Also depicted are designs such as billowing harem pants modified and sleek upscale poodle skirts and Tartan patterned capes pockets dresses and accessories. Others encompass swimwear ski wear as well as the emphasized and often enforced domesticity of the late 1950’s to 1960’s with stylish plaid house-dresses in the kitchen and bar as well as frequent use of lace. The Gay Gibson label maintained a showroom at 1407 Broadway on the 39th Floor in New York ad held over 24 showings from 1961-1969 including Junior Dresses Summer Collections Spring Junior Collections as well as Holiday and Resort collections. By the early 1970’s the label was having financial difficulties and the popularity began to drop with the company run by Desaix Gernes her mother and husband Paul before folding a few years after Sara Desaix Gernes’ death. Marian and Elliot Mizelle established Madrigal Inc. name chosen because of the seductive chic of Manhattan’s Le Madrigal restaurant and grew into a legendary luxury boutique at one point operating store fronts in Santa Barbara downtown San Francisco and Carmel CA. In her 2015 interview for “Women in Business†with the Carmel Pine Cone Marian stated she “wanted to be an actress but it didn’t work out that way. I used to sketch a lot so I studied design instead. Everything I touched while was designing worked. I got a lot of jobs and was featured on a lot of Seventeen magazine covers.†This cataloguer could find not similar extant archive of original designs for the 1960’s period of the Gay Gibson label or for Marian Ross Mizelle; See: Interview with Desaix Gernes Garment Industry Oral History Collection The Kansas City Public Library Jan. 14 2005 SC229 Series 2 2024; Gay Gibson Vintage Fashion Guild 2025; Donnelly Garment Company vs. International Ladies Garment Workers Union et al Photographs Clothing Demonstration The Pendergast Years Kansas City in the Jazz Age & Great Depression 2025. 197856289Los Angeles CA & Detroit MI: Chrysler Corp. ca. 1978-1980. 4to. 103 colour and black & white photographs sized 8 x 10 in. w/ nearly all featuring inventory numbers on versos many w/ concept artist’s identifying marks at lower fore-edge of images all w/ 3-hole punch at upper fore-edge. Black vinyl 3-ring binder manuscript label on spine w/ 1 sheet of manuscript tucked-into front cover entitled “Image Studies†rounded corners slight shelfwear light toning to leaf of manuscript NF exemplar. A fascinating Chrysler Corp. Design Group photo archive documenting the development of the full scale mock-ups and designs for the 1978 & 1979 Chrysler 300 Chrysler Cordoba as well as the rebadged Dodge Charger early concepts for the Dodge Minivan 5 years before introduction and the under appreciated Dodge Omni rally car. Many of the Chrysler concept car designs included here are signed by such artists as Svensen Kreiling and the famed Stewart Reed. The album opens with concept car designs for the 1979 Chrysler Cordoba 300 offering views of a concept car mock-up not only featuring a split between two different designs but also different wheels as well as views of the designs littering the walls and ceilings of the Chrysler Corp. Design Group studios. It also shows the nascent red & blue pinstriping on silver when the eventual production model featured that on a white background. Also shown are the development photos for the rebadged Dodge Challengers and Dodge Chargers basically reusing the Mitsubishi Galant Lambda as a base. Many of these Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth Mopar concept cars are shown with a variety of artists’ renderings for Targa tops sleek modern lines and colours which unfortunately for Chrysler never made it into general production because if they had Chrysler may not have needed the 1979 bailout by the US Government. Of particular interest are the artists renderings of a 1978 Dodge Omni as a rally car and two very early concept designs for the Dodge/Chrysler minivan project led by Stewart Reed. The unsung Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon developed by Chrysler’s European Division were Chrysler’s first front-wheel compact car beating the K-Car to market by over three years and with its’ handling and popularity even received the attention of Carroll Shelby who worked to convert them into true performance race cars. The Minivan would remake the American auto market from the time of its eventual production introduction in 1984 revive the fortunes of Chrysler and spawn many competitors such as the Chevrolet Astro Ford Aerostar Toyota Previa and many others. Reed worked in Chrysler’s design group from 1971 to 1980 as part of the initial Minivan design team then Toyota’s Calty Design Research Inc. in Newport Beach CA and after 1994 operated his own design studio in Plymouth MI creating such concept vehicles as the 1998 Gear Box SUV and the 2001 Cunningham C7 Car.
